Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
Hi everyone, As a child and young adult i was never really obese, slightly over weight averaging about 140-150lbs at 5'2 but in 2000 i was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and panic disorder. After two years of medication trials and errors my weight topped off at 240 give or take a few pounds. I stopped taking my meds fullishly and lost some weight getting down to around 175 where i spent a few years. My bipolar got bad again and i had to start meds again. back to 235. I researched wls and was ready to go however i lost my insurance and my ability to get the surgery. My meds have been stable and my doctor was wonderful with not putting me on anything that caused weight gain. Ive found a coctail that works for me and as far as the bipolar goes im as...

Stall
on June 2, 2013 6:29 am

I'm one day short of three weeks out. I hit a stall almost a week ago. On my two weeks out exactly I hit my first stall at only 14 lbs down. I lost a pound a day the first two weeks and now nothing. Needless to say I am more than disappointed. Not only is my weight loss super duper slow but I am also at a stall after only 14 lbs. This sucks!!! Am I ever really going to get to my goal weight? Is this surgery going to work for me?

Starting to Walk
on May 29, 2013 4:30 am

I went on a nice walk today, almost a mile. I think it went well. I did it in less than 20 minutes. I know that isn't the most amazing time ever but being two weeks out of surgery I'm not going to complain. I was walking about 3 miles an hour. I only burned 96 calories but who can complain about 96 calories when you're only eating between 350-450 a day. I even got my boyfriend to go with me. I want him to exercise with me because I worry about his weight and health. He is a big guy and is always complaining about his feet and ankles, when he does anything outside he comes in looking like he's going to have a heart attack. it scares me because he is only 30 and his 36 year old brother just had a mini stroke. :( Anyway, at least he went with me today and he walked the whole 18 minutes which is more exercise than he gets in an average day. I am going again tomorrow. He said he would go with me.

May 26th Check In Again
on May 26, 2013 3:38 am

It is 13 days after surgery and against what I said I was going to do I weighed myself. So Starting weight 235, day of surgery 230, today 216.6!!!! So almost 14 lbs down. YAY!!!! I'm so stoked. 13.4 lbs in 13 days. Not bad. I can handle loosing a pound a day.  I'm eating soft foods now and doing incredible. I think I can do better but I'm working on it. I went for a walk yesterday and that went good. i was only walking for about 20 minutes but it's a start.

UPDATE!!!!!
on May 25, 2013 3:49 am

Well I was over doing the crackers. I would eat a good ten or fifteen of them a day. Too much!!!! I ended up swelling up with water weight and stopped loosing weight. That caused me to be a wreck and I started crying pretty regularly with the feeling of guilt every time I ate or drank anything.

Thursday I went to see my doctor and told him what was going on. He was so wonderful. He told me that crackers would NOT make me gain weight . With my stomach being so small I couldn't possibly eat enough to make me gain. He told me that I did incredible with my weight loss so far. I had lost 10 lbs and 10% of my excess body weight in 10 days. Because I'm a light weight that is a good start.

He told me that by six months he expects me to loose 50-60 more pounds then over the following year I would be expected to loose the rest of my weight. I'm hoping to loose faster but we will see. I want to be at goal by a year. I can't wait.

My doctor changed my diet. He told me that if I could handle crackers, I can handle my soft foods a few days early. I am on a soft food diet for the next four weeks. I'm so stoked about it. I am loving cottage cheese. I was never a huge fan of it plain before surgery. I always ate it mixed with pineapple but now, well NOW I absolutely LOVE IT. I'm eating it several times a day.

allowed crackers!!!!
on May 21, 2013 2:18 am

I spoke to my doctor yesterday and even though I did it the day before I found out I'm allowed to have crackers to help with the nausea. Now this is a good thing because it helps emensely but is also a bad thing because I woke up today with water weight and I didn't loose any weight!!!! That is a scary thing only being 8 days out!!!!! so I'm going to do my best to just deal with the sick tummy and not eat any crackers today and see what tomorrow brings in weight loss. I have been weighing myself daily since wed and I have been loosing a pound a day. I'm not sure what my weight was the day of surgery according to the hospital scale but according to my scale I have lost 11 lbs since surgery morning and 16lbs since my pre op appointment. I have one of those nifty little scales that keeps track of all of your previous weights and thats what its telling me!!!! yay me. LOL I am going to try desperately to get in more water today. I did poorly yesterday. seems the more I eat of real food ( crackers ) the less I drink. Yesterday is my worst day with water intake!!!!!! So I'm back to it again today!!! Dr also told me not to worry about protein right now since that is making me pretty sick too. He said to drink 3 glasses of milk a day if I can tolerate it because that will give me approximately 25 grams of protein. If I can force down one or two carnations that would help too but I'm not forcing myself since that has even been hard to stomach. I have carnation down for breakfast and lunch today but I'm not sure that it will work. I have also been eating swiss cheese... It has tasted wonderful but probably not the best thing to be eating to loose weight. I had four pieces yesterday. WOW. Anyway, thats whats up thats whats going on. ttyl
