Gearing Up!!
Jan 25, 2010
I have been looking at this surgery for about three years. I almost had it done last year, but I am really glad I waited. Now I KNOW I cannot lose the weight without extra help. I am going to Mexico instead of New Iberia with Dr. Borland. Dr. Borlands price went up, the doctor in Mexico was running a special. (That is such an odd thing to say when talking about your health care, and really your life... he was running a special....just what is my life worth????) Anyway I really couldn't afford the 10 grand plus, so I am going to Dr. Almanza.
I went to the regular Dr today and got a prescription for liquid phenergan, liquid antibiotics and liquid lortab for pain to bring with me. Because of the route I am taking- going to Mx, I feel like I really need to be much more proactive than I would be if I were staying in the States. These precautions may be unnecessary, but you know the old saying about an ounce of prevention :)
My husband will be with me, so we are taking hand sanitizer, paper tape (allergic to the other kind), sterile pads, gauze, antibacterial spray, antibacterial cleaning wash, spray on hydrogen peroxide, and hibiclens. I plan on having my husband do all of my dressing changes. Also bringing lysol spray for the room we are staying in at the recovery house, as well as baby juices and can soups, bottled water and clear protein shots. I want to get some bactroban for my nose as well.
I picked up all these recommendations here and there from other posters on this site. I thank you all so much for your help and advice. When I get back I will post on what helped me, and what wasn't needed, and any other pertinent or helpful information. God bless each of you on your journey!!

Surgery Date and new surgeon
Jan 20, 2010
I have a day for the surgery!! I am so excited and scared at the same time.
I need to recap a bit. I was using Dr. Borland. I called to set up my appointment, and found out he had gone up in price $500. This made the total cost for my sleeve over $10,000. I just didn't know if I could bring myself to spend that much money, it would take every penny we have, and then some. I was pretty upset, but all things really do work together for good. This jump in price is what prompted me to look into different doctors. I was on a website and saw an ad for $5200 for the sleeve. I thought, No Way!! It wasn't a doctor I was familiar with, so I started checking into him. There were a few bad experiences with him, but a lot of good experiences as well. I asked a few people about him, and got good responses back, except for one about the Dr. Betancourt that he works under. He had the best price, which was nice, and most everyone was happy with him and their experience there. .....to be continued- my puppy is throwing up.....
