Changing my goal weight

Apr 15, 2011

After lots of hard thinking and reviewing my numbers I've decided to change my goal weight to 170lbs from 155lbs.

If you've read my blog before, you will know that I've really struggled to determine what my goal weight should be.  My surgeon never set one, and I arbitrally set goal at 155lbs - which would take me to the top of the BMI normal range and also to me losing just about 1/2 of me !  However, I'm not a big fan of BMI ranges as it's just a general indicator and doesn't take into account body composition - so doesn't work for everyone.  Over the last 12 months I have worked out A LOT to tone my body and build muscle - so for me the BMI is an indicator of idea weight, but not the 'be all and end all' as I prefer to look at body composition too.

I get my composition done about every 2 months - at my last profile my stats were as follows :

Weight : 174lbs
% Body Fat : 26.6%

My muscle/fat ratio means that I am described as muscular but overweight - but I only carry 4.2lbs of excess fat and 14.3lbs of excess soft lean mass (muscle, water and bones - which I'm told I shouldn't lose).  Therefore I have 4.2lbs of fat to lose.

My vital statistics are : Bust 38", Waist 32", Hips 40" - I'm 5 foot 7 tall - so this is a nice size for me.

I am wearing UK size 12 or 14 clothes -  (US size 8 or 10).

I am planning plastic surgery in the next couple of weeks which I believe will reduce my waist and hips and possibly my bust to take me comfortably into a UK size 12 which is a great size for me as I'll still have some curves and as I do lots of exercise have nice muscle definition.

So there you go - after a lot of deliberation and research - my final declared goal is 170 - which will mean a loss of 129lbs - just 4lbs away.  I expect to lose a little weight as part of my plastics journey - skin removal and surgery shock - so anticipate reaching below goal maybe to around 160 ish which will allow a little regain to a maintenance weight of 170 lbs - give or take 5lbs.

So if you wondering how I can post the inches above and still weigh 174lbs - here's a great picture (courtesy of ajordan's) which shows how much less space 5lbs of muscle takes up compared to 5lbs of fat (which also helps to demonstrate how you can lose inches but not pounds).

5lbs fat - yellow
5lbs muscle - red
