Steph - I had surgery on Aug 27 2001. I have lost 80 lbs and have 16 to go. I am 49 years old. My only regret is that I couldn;t have this surgery 20 years ago. I was married for thirteen years and have two children ages 23 and 24. I have been divorced for 12 years and was morbidly obese from 1991-2001. My social life was very stressful and it didn;t help to have to meet someone when my size was an issue. ANyway, my social life has vastly improved, I am off all antidepressants, and LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. THe issue of mortality from this surgery cannot be ignored. I almost lost my life from a bleed and required six pints of blood two days post -op. It was horrible. But, and I say this with little hesitation: I don't regret it for a minute. well...you could plan a trip...she doesn't hafta know it's a surgery trip.;-) you should do what is right for you not her and we all here will support you!!!! and if you tell your insurance company to not speak to anyone but you regarding your case then they won't talk about you with anyone but your docs office. hope that helps. blessed be~

Stephanie....Boy I know how you feel. I have the same problems, however my friends and work partners are very understanding, however I rarely go anywhere that requires walking for more than 5 mins. It really is so limiting to be so overweight!! Well it sounds like your mom is not too supportive (LOL), to say the least. You need to do what is best for you, and your mom needs to keep her nose out of it!!. You are an adult, and you just go ahead and get this surgery. Take care and hang in there. Mari Seattle

Dear Sweet Stephanie. I am not sure how old you are, but assuming you are over 18, you MUST do what is best for you. You are right, more people die from obesity-related complications than from WLS. If you already KNOW that this is for you, don't let ANYONE talk you out of it...not even dear ole' Mom. I am sure that she is just scared for you....that is very common. She has no jurisdiction over your isurance company, so don't worry about that aspect. Do what YOU need to do Sweetie, and KNOW that WE are here for YOU! Warm hugs...Rhonda :)
