How Does Disability Work?

Fortunately, I have never been required to take a long period of time off work. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how disability works? My company does not offer sick time and I have used my vacation time. If I go on disability how long does it take to get a check and how close to my regular earnings would it be? Any info would be helpful - I'm in California.
