What is the protocal when changing insurance providers?

I am changing jobs and insurance providers.. currently under BC/BS of MS will change to BC/BS of alabama..How long do you generally have to wait to send a letter in to the new insurance company.. is there like a pre-exisiting condition time.. If anyone has had any experience with this please give me your opinion on this.
