Has anyone experienced a reduction in pain following surgery?

I have a lot of back and leg pain, especially lower back and knee pain. I am hoping to see a reduction in pain, because I won't be able to take a lot of pain medication following the RNY surgery. Are there any positive comments related to pain reduction? What medications are good for arthritis and general pain?
