Which type of iron is best absorbed, which is kindest to our system, what is carbonyl

Iron and hemoglobin is low as per lab results. Doc says ferrous gluconate, 300 mg, 5X a day for 3 months then do labs again. Does this sound right to you guys? I'm not drop dead tired, didn't even know I was low on iron. I want to take iron that is well tolerated. It is more important to me to not be sick from the iron I take even if I have to take smaller doses more often. I have searched the internet for iron info and have not found anything on carbonyl iron. What is it exactly? Please advise on taking iron.
