    Mohammed M.H. Kalan, MD, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery and the Associate Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at The George Washington University Hospital. His areas of expertise include minimal access gastrointestinal surgery, colorectal surgery, bariatric surgery and surgical oncology. Dr. Kalan earned his medical degree from B.J. Medical College in Poona, India. He served as a surgical resident and staff surgeon in India before moving to the United Kingdom. He graduated as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Edinburgh and undertook additional training in colorectal surgery from the postgraduate training programs at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Subsequently, Dr. Kalan came to the United States and completed a general surgery residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at The George Washington University Hospital. He has received numerous academic and teaching awards, including the Outstanding Faculty Teacher Award from the surgical residents at Georgetown University Hospital and the W.L. Gore Award as a chief resident at Temple University Hospital. The Georgetown University students also nominated Dr. Kalan for the Golden Apple Award in 2000. Other awards include Washingtonian Top Doctor, Outstanding Physician Specialist, Georgetown Caring Star, Georgetown Shining Star, Gallery of Service Excellence and Who's Who listings. Dr. Kalan's research interests include the impact of decreasing biomaterial mass on patient comfort, evaluation of biomaterials for prophylactic use in high-risk surgical patients and minimal access surgery and host anti-tumor defense mechanisms. He is a prolific speaker who has given over 60 lectures and presentations, nationally and regionally, and over 30 lectures at international events, meetings and surgical workshops. In addition, he has been invited to serve as a visiting professor of surgery in several countries. Dr. Kalan has been published in Archives of Surgery, Surgical Endoscopy, Contemporary Surgery, American Journal of Roentgenology, Surgical Rounds, Journal of Trauma and Journal of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.   Dr. Kalan is a Diplomate at the American College of Surgeons and a member of several national and international professional and scholarly organizations including the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, Association for Surgical Education, American Hernia Society, American Society of General Surgeons, Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, British Society of Gastroenterology, and the International Society of Digestive Surgery.
