    Dr. Matthew Coates is a board certified general surgeon. He studied molecular and cell biology at the University of California at Berkeley as an undergraduate and then attended medical school at the University of Sydney in Australia. He completed his residency training in general surgery at San Joaquin General Hospital. His bariatric scope of practice includes robotic sleeve gastrostomy, robotic gastric bypass, robotic duodenal switch, laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, revision and duodenal switch surgeries. Dr. Coates is an associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a candidate member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and a member of the Stanislaus Medical Society. In addition, Dr. Coates has interests in other minimally invasive abdominal surgeries, trauma and critical care. Dr. Coates is the member of the ASMBS and Director of Bariatrics at Memorial Medical Center.
