Garden Grove Hospital Hospital

Center for Surgical Weight Control at the Grove

The Center for Surgical Weight Control at Garden Grove Hospital, a 3,700 square foot facility, provides the latest innovations in personalized surgical weight control. We are one of the leading area hospitals in performing Laparoscopic Banding System Surgery, a less invasive alternative to gastric bypass surgery and one that you should consider when weighing your surgery options. There is no intestinal re-routing, and no cutting or stapling of the stomach wall or bowel. Consequently, the benefits include minimal scarring, reduced pain, a shortened hospital stay and the entire procedure is both adjustable and reversible.

As part of Garden Grove Hospital’s comprehensive program, the Center offers patient education courses, which include the opportunity to hear first hand about your surgical options from patients who have found the courage to have weight control surgery.  We also provide on-site representatives who specialize in financial coordination and insurance authorization.  An exceptional clinical team and a highly experienced Bariatric surgeon are here to help each patient make an informed decision.

Dr. Carson Liu, Medical Director for the Center for Surgical Weight Control has achieved numerous medical distinctions and professional honors. Dr. Liu was the Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery for the UCLA School of Medicine in 2003, where he conducted research and published studies on gastrointestinal hormones, intestinal absorption and pancreatic cancer.  He has also researched robotic minimally invasive surgery for diabetes and obesity, in addition to studying the scientific differences and similarities between laparoscopic and open gastric bypass. To date, Dr. Liu has successfully performed more than 2,000 weight loss procedures. Read more about Dr. Liu here.

Our entire surgical weight control program includes:

  • Individualized treatment plans
  • Preoperative consultation
  • Ongoing patient education
  • Insurance and Financial coordination
  • Support Groups and Follow-up care
  • Multidisciplinary team includes surgeons, nurse practitioners, dietitians, behavioral specialists and support staff
  • Conscious Eating Program
Conscious Eating

After undergoing bariatric surgery, such as Laparoscopic Banding System Surgery, patients have the option to participate in the Conscious Eating program, attending group therapy sessions and completing at-home educational exercises.  Licensed and specially trained mental health therapists will work with patients to help them understand the difference between physical and emotional hunger, the importance of listening to and understanding the body’s signals, and how to adopt positive and healthy eating habits. Conscious Eating offers participants programs that range from seven to 28 weeks, depending on their needs and interests.

The Center for Surgical Weight Control also offers gastric bypass surgery in which staples are used to permanently close off part of the stomach. This surgery uses both restriction and malabsorption to achieve weight loss.

The decision to have weight loss surgery is not an easy one. At the Center for Surgical Weight Control, our commitment to quality is the first step in helping you successfully achieve your weight loss goals and embrace a healthier lifestyle.   For a list of our upcoming patient education seminars and events, please visit www.ifoundthecourage.com
