Who do I listen to?

I was tested for my iron level 2 months ago by my surgeon. It was low. He told me to increase my vitron-c iron to 1 and 2 tablets on alternating days. I did that. Vitron-c has 200mg of ferrous fumarate per tablet. I have been feeling yucky for almost 2 months now. I saw my PCP and he did bloodwork and prescribed an antibiotic as I had a fever. I also have to use my Advair inhaler religiously. I still feel weak, dizzy, nauseous and short of breath. I can barely walk up a flight of stairs without feeling like I'm going to pass out and I'm tired all the time. So much for exercise. I sleep so much I'm not getting much fluids or food in. Maximum of 400 calories a day. I can't eat any meat, milk or a host of other foods. There are really only 4 or 5 foods I can tolerate withou puking or feeling really sick. My bloodwork came back from my PCP saying my iron was even lower than before. He told me to take 325mg of iron twice a day. I see him again on Tuesday. Who do I listen to? My surgeon thinks I'm a nutcase (another story), so I'm hesitant to call him. Should I trust my PCP and could iron deficiency cause my symptoms? Also I had an upper endoscopy which ruled out ulcers or stricture. Any advice or someone with a similar story would help. Thanks, Karen

Yes, low iron can cause those symptoms. If the levels were even lower than before, your PCP is right to raise them, obvously the other method wasn't working. As for advair and not being able to breath, do you take other inhalers? Or other meds for you breathing problems? You might check into that as well.

Karen, You sound malnourished and dehydrated to me. Call your PCP back and get to an ER for IV hydration and maybe nutrition as well. I'm worried about you kid. Robin

I would definately listen to the PCP, I know that they are usually on top of things moreso than the surgeon just because they are the after care team!! Be careful hon and make sure that you let the PCP know all of the things that are happening to you ok?? Best of luck to you, and please keep us posted! Steph

You definately sound dehydrated to me. Please tell your PCP that you are not getting much fluids!!! Have him check you out for hydration.. It can and will make you very sick if your not getting enough fluids in your system. Hope you're feeling better soon!! Anna
