any smokers out there
Dear Linda,
My surgeon requested that I quit smoking between 3-4 weeks before surgery. I smoke about a pack and a half a day on the average, and I quit with the help of a 21 mg nicotine replacement patch on December 8th. My surgery is in 7 more days and my "plan" is to remain a non-smoker until I get home from the hospital (at the earliest). I know it seems kind of "stupid" to even think about smoking again when I've been able to abstain for more than a month now. But, holding it as a sort of resdervation of something I can do again later has really helped me quit for NOW.
I wanted to have this surgery very badly! I also want to have an eventful surgery and a speedy recovery. I figure that being a non-smoker (even if it may only be temporary) will help me achieve these goals.
The nicotine patches really seem to help the cravings. I bought the generic brand at Savon Drug Stores. It was much cheaper than the name brand and just as effective.
Hoping this may help. Good luck to you!

Linda, I had my last cigarette on Sept 11. I used the patch and all the willpower and determination that one human being can muster. I think that what helped me the most was to cont to remind myself that I REALLY WANT this surgery and this is just one of the steps to get it. Also, my ex said I would NEVER be able to give up the cigs cause I was a "weak" person. Guess I showed him huh? lol I am SO happy to be a non-smoker. Besides the ridiculous cost, I no longer have that horrible smell on my hair, my clothes, or my car. It is so cool to go to a restaraunt and say "Non-smoking" and mean it! I can get close to people and not worry that I smell like an ashtray. Hang in there. There are good days and bad days, but all in all, those cravings only last a few moments, then they go away. Tough it through them. You can do this!!!! Good luck. Tricia G - surgery date 1-17-06
