pasta and rice

Hi everyone, I had a long talk with my nutritionist about pasta and rice today, thought I'd share some of the points she made: Spaghetti/angel hair is the worst choice and should be avoided long term. For whatever reason, its hard to chew up and then has this way of reconnecting itself in your stomach, forming a ball or a long string, both are problematic. She said macaroni is the softest pasta and best choice in the beginning and then bowtie and others are suitable later on. Rice expands its size when moistened. First when you cook it and then when its in your stomach. Because its so small its hard to chew to a pulp and the pieces can easily get stuck between the pouch and intestine. She said to think of it like the movement not to toss rice at weddings as birds eat the rice, it expands in their system and kills them....same general concept for us. Untoasted bread also follows this concept, it expands and clogs you up. She also reinforced avocados, in moderation, as a high protein/good fat food. FYI on some tips that may help. ~Tiffany

Hi Tif! Yeah I learned the hard way about the expanding that Pasta can do. The other day I made a bad choice for a afternoon snack of three small raviolli. Well After drinkning water the pasta expanded and I got very sick. Threw up, had bad cramps. I had to lay down. It took me til yesterday evening to feel better. I tried to stick to liquids to sooth my aching puch. I will miss pasta but I think I iwll leave it alone for awhile yet. deb

Thanks for the info. I do miss rice. Have had Kidney beans though and they were yummy and very high in protein

Hi Tiffany, I'm not allowed to eat pasta products until another 2 weeks. They really don't recommend rice for the same reason you listed. It can expand in your pouch. Thanks for the additional information. Take Care, Carly

Thanks Tiffany! I had those same questions. Also I was wondering when I could like start eating mac and cheese again? I am assuming I will have to wait till I "graduate" to semi soft or soft foods. Thanks for posting that!!! It was really helpful! -Sue 242/???/130
