Post Surgery Rumblings

I had surgery on the 23rd, which went well. The only snags were that I had an allergic reaction to the medication in the epidural which left my skin bright red, itchy and feeling like I had fireants biting me everywhere. They removed the epidural and gave me a PCA/Morphine pump, which helped with pain but made me very nauseous and did nothing to relieve the allergic reaction. They had to take me off of the pain meds and give me Lortab, which I am still on. Benedryl and some other medication as well...whew, that was not fun. Anywho, I am home now as of yesterday afternoon. I am on clear liquids until I see my surgeon again (next Friday). These gas rumblinbs in my abdomen are driving me nuts! When does this go away? I am moving and walking. I'm sipping too, but I feel like I'm a little dehydrated. I can't believe my intestines are capable of making such a LOUD racket. When does it go away? I want so badly to start feeling like myself!! HI Chele, I had my surgery on 1/16 and the first few days home I thought that there were planes taking off inside of me. It was loud and almost obnoxious. Thankfully the airport is now closed! It only lasted for about 3 days. I still have occasional gas movement but NOTHING like those first few days home form the hospital. Congratulations on your surgery! God Bless, Jen

So sorry to hear you had such a rough time with the medications! As for the gas, it took me about a week to get past it. Still happens from time to time, but not like that first week. Hang in there! Sandy L

The surgery nurse prescribed me Simethicone to help with the gas (chewable tablets 4 times a day) You also need to try shifting or laying on your left side. It helps!! Gas will be bad for about 1 1/2 weeks. Make sure you are sipping and not getting air in when you drink. It'll get better ::hugs:: Cyndi
