Another 123er - 4 days post op
I had my RNY on Monday and was released Wednesday afternoon. All went well. I had no nausea at all and the pain was well managed. I haven't taken any pain meds since leaving the hospital. I don't like the way the Loratab makes me feel and for some reason I can't sleep when I take it.
The only part that didn't go as planned was in recovery when they were trying to get me awake. I guess I didn't want to start breathing on my own and they re-intubated? me. I can remember this and it wasn't fun at all. I wasn't awake enough to move but my belly REALLY hurt and I was gagging on the tube down my throat and felt like I couldn't get a breath. I was in surgery for 3 hours, recovery for 5 hours and spent the first night in the Special Care Unit as a precaution due to my sleep apnea. By midnight I had walked the hallway a few times with my entourage of nurses. I was moved to the ward that gets all the bariatric patients for the second night.
I've got to say, my surgeon and the nursing staff were absolutely first rate. Summit-Alta Bates has a bariatric program that in addition to a couple of great surgeons has a nursing program that run by 2 nurses that have both had bariatric surgery. They all have to have special classes before being allowed to care for bariatric patients. I've unfortunately had the chance to sample 5 different area hospitals over the past few years and I'd rate these guys at the top.
I've been able to sleep in my own bed for the last 2 nights. This is a real luxury after the hospital beds that are all 6 inches too short for me. I'm a bit sore still and really tired. I've been trying to drink very slowly, but I haven't really figured out what full feels like yet with my new pouch. I've got the next couple of weeks off work and plan to relax (and walk) for most of it.
I started this process at 341 and lost 32 pounds before surgery on the 800 calorie a day pre-op diet my doc recommended. I just weighed myself and I'm 297, Under 300!

Roger,
Glad to hear everything ended up OK. I'm like you sore, tired and need to walk. I sip constantly, every 1 or 2 minutes. It has kept me from being dehydrated. My left side seems to hurt the most, other than that my surgery was also a success.
Great weight loss
Keep in touch with your progress.
Rebecca
Thanks for the post, Roger. Glad you are doing well too! I'm still trying to recognize the full feeling also. I think I'm starting to get it! At first I was worried because it seemed like I could drink to much, but no, now I think the "baby sips" they kept telling me to take were bigger than I thought; always thought I was a gulper, but maybe not.
