Can't move to soft foods

I am supposed to be onto soft foods as of 5 days post op. I'm 12 days post-op and anything that's more than liquid hurts. Now even protein shakes hurt. I called my dr. yesterday and his nurse said to go back to clear liquids for the night and then try a different soft food today. I didn't even realize until 3 this afternoon that all I had was half a glass of crystal light. So I had a protein shake, and now I'm in pain. I feel sad and frustrated. I have no desire to put anything in my mouth. I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem. Amy

Amy, How fast are you drinking these shakes? Sip lady sip!! I really think maybe you are trying to get too much in at one time, It takes me 1 1/2 to get 8 oz of Nectar in. I take it slow! ::hugs:: Cyndi

I am having similar issues but not on soft foods yet. My surgeon told me yesterday that it appears I am mildly dehydrated and within Ketosis. If the ketones are not able to flush out of my body with adequate fluids- they create symptoms like a hangover---tiredness, achiness, nausea, headache- most of which I have. He stated the only intervention was more fluids- even though I said fluids of almost any kind make me nauseous. I hope I do not need an IV infusion for hydration but it may be coming to that for all I know. I have been able to get in between 30-40 ounces of fluid daily and that is a challenge. Surgeon wants it to be 64 ounces. I am lactose intolerant, senstive to neutrasweet aka aspartame, and hypersensitive to smells. So much of what I smell makes me feel nauseous so it will not even make it to my mouth. I have not vomited yet but have had what seems to be dumping symptoms (face gets hot, saliva starts over producing, nausea, and then dumping.) It's even happened once when I had nothing to eat or drink for several hours (as I was in bed sleeping). My surgeon also suggested the OTC med for nausea - Emetrol. I tried it a few times yesterday but it seems too mild to have any lasting effect. I am frustrated too but this too shall pass eventually. Hang in there Hugs, Karen

Hi Amy, I had surgery the same day as you, and have been on liquids, went to the doctors today and now I am on puree. I am thrilled for the farina and mashed potatoes, hope I can tolerate them. I have a whole grocery list made for my husband when he comes in from work. My doctor takes each faze slowly, I will be on puree foods for a month until I go back to see her, Good luck and hope you can tolerate your food soon.
