Dry Skin Anyone?

Hi Friends, I have been having a problem with dry, itchy skin in the last couple of days. This is a problem that I really didn't have prior to surgery. Is this a sign of dehydration? I am trying to get all my fluids in, but it's difficult. Any tips other than increasing my fluid intake (which I am already doing)? Thanks, Rosa

Hi Rosa. Yes that can be a sign of dehydration. Are you drinking a 1/2 cup of water every 30 minutes? I have the same issue and asked the dietician yesterday and she said make sure you are getting in that 1/2 cup water every 1/2 hour. Hope this helps! Part of the dry skin also can be due to the fact that it is winter. I know here in Minnesota that can be a problem and I did have dry skin even before surgery. But I am noticing it on my hands and thats why the dietician said to make sure that you are getting tha****er in. I have invested in a big bottle of lotion too ...lol -Sue

Thanks Sue! I will work on getting that 1/2 cup of water in every half hr. So glad I don't live in Minnesota, it's cold enough in Delaware!!! Rosa

Also, what is the difference in your fat intake from now and before surgery? I think this is my reason for the itchies. My hair isn't even oily anymore. I started taking fish oil at the suggestion of my doc. Waiting to see if this helps. For me, it isn't the winter, as I am in Calif. and it is near 90 today. And I get all the H20 I need.

Hi Kristi, I hadn't noticed, but you are right. My hair is much less oily than before. I guess the fat intake really makes a difference. And if it makes a difference in hair, then it probably does in skin too. Thanks for your response! Rosa

I've found just the opposite. With menopause setting in I was stuggling with dry skin and now it's seemed to reverse. I think it's all the fluids I'm drinking But my skin is wonderful now

Wish I could say the same, Ronna. I scratched so much yesterday, that when I woke up this morning I had scratch marks all over. Looked like I had had some really kinky sex or a fight with a wild cat! Rosa

Hi Rosa!! My hands are terribly dry. I had my surgery 1/25. I will see my doctor next week and find out my blood work results. If your sodium level is low, could be a sign of dehydration. Is your urine dark yellow? A away to see if you are dehydrated is pinch your forarm, and if it stays up it is called " tenting" and means you are possibly dehydrated. I am trying to drink also , yet hard to fit all in sometimes. I know for myself that fluids are important, being a nurse, yet it is a little hard to fit all in. I am trying. Let your doctor know if continues so they can check your electrolytes ( lab work). Keep us posted!! Keep opn drinking also!! I am with you on that!!! Andrea
