What are "good" carbs?

Okay.... so I know that protein is essential in my diet as a post-op. As I track my daily food intake on Fitday.com, I keep finding that I am consuming a fairly high percentage of carbs. (I strive to take in the majority of my calories from protein, carbs second and fat last.) I feel like a big dummy! Although I attended the initial dietary class, I am still very naive as to exactly what carbs are, what percentage I'm supposed to consume, etc.... According to my surgeon/nutritionist good carbs are natural carbs that come from things like cottage cheese, yogurt, fruits, veggies, nuts, etc. Bad carbs are "white" carbs (Bread, rice, flour, sugar, crackers, etc). I try to stay under 40g. of carbs a day, and most of mine are from protein foods (like cottage cheese, soy, etc) but some days carbs still account for like 20-30% of my caloric intake for the day, depending on how many calories I consume.

Good carbs come from natural foods such as whole grains, rice, wheat (bread, cereal), fruit. In general, not processed. If the words processed or refined are in the description, take a pass.
