Weird taste issues

Hi all, I'm a day or two over one month post op. Lately, I search out and read labels and plan something to eat that sound absolutely wonderful. For instance, I found some Carolina BBQ (being from NC, its the only kind I like!) the label added up right and I excitedly heated it up for lunch. Suddenly, in the middle of eating, it just didn't taste good anymore. I felt not naseous, but just supremely uninterested. THis has happened several times. I buy something and can't wait to have an addition to my limited repertoire only to find I am almost disgusted with it. Has anyone had that happen? Does it go away? I'm posting this on the main board too in case its just a newbie thing. Debbie

Oh my gosh! I can so relate to this. My example is a creamy potato soup that I made a couple weeks post-op -- was delicious! I ate my serving and thought it was the best potato soup I had ever had. Later that night, just the though of it sitting in the fridge had me gagging. I haven't been able to eat it since. I have a good friend who is nearly 1 year post-op and she says that she experiences the same type of thing, but not as bad as in the initial post-op period.

yes, i am definitely having this happen, although I am not eating much yet, i had some italian wedding soup, strained, but tried one of the little meatballs and it tasted like cat food to me! I used to love this soup! I also had the same thing with eggs. I have eaten them once since surgery and they went down fine, but I have had no interest in them since. Weird.... Karyn

Hi Debbie, I am almost 5 weeks out and its happened to me with lots of things....food, toothpaste, perfume. The drs say its tied to changed in enzymes and other triggers in our system. Its certainly interesting and normal. And a bit sad when one's favorite food is no longer interesting.... Cheers, Tiffany

I know what you mean... I used to LOVE potatoes... I have only tried them 3 times since being post op and they taste so GROSS to me now. Really, it is the oddest thing. Yesterday I figured that I was far enough out that maybe everything was back to "normal" and I bit into a french fry (bad I know, but it looked so good)... that lasted about 10 seconds, I spit it out

I really believe it has to do with being in ketosis--when I was on atkins and now that I am eating all protein after surgery I bought the ketone testing strips and yes my body is in ketosis--the good part is I am burning stored fat and I dont have cravings and I am not hungry however the worst side effect for me when I was on atkins and now is that I dont like the taste of really anything and I cant stand the thought of having to eat even the 2 oz I am supposed to--right now I am drinking my isopure and even that isnt really turning me on--oh well--its weird how before I couldnt wait to eat and now I am just eating to feul my body which is a good thing--

This is absolutely happening to me! Potatoes and potato soup sound great but then just don't cut it when I put them in my mouth. Everything has been very sweet to me too. I was in the grocery today buying some cottage cheese (8 oz. for $1.49 = 4 meals! I love my new food spending amounts!!!!). Anyway, everyone in there was buying cupcakes and cookies and chocolates and absolutely none of it appealed to me...let me assure you that this would not have been the case pre-surgery! Jen

YES!! I'm so glad to know that I'm not alone with this! I will open the door to the fridge when it's time for me to eat and NOTHING will look appealing. I basically find myself choosing the thing that sounds least disgusting to me at the moment. Everything basically tastes bland and/or like sawdust. Luckily, sugar free popsicles still thrill me. They're one of the few things that still taste really yummy to me these days!

Can I just ask.....are you putting the cole slaw on your bbq? I absolutely love NC bbq being that most of my family is from there also. I have had a craving for it lately and havent wanted to make any, but I too am not wanting to eat ANYTHING!!! I look in the fridge and just can't stand the look of food anymore. I had some eggs forced on me and I ate them and they were pretty good, just scrambled them with some sauteed onions and tomatoes. I can keep those down but don't even want to try anything new cause everything sounds yucky! You are not alone in this, I think we probably go through it. Anyway about the bbq, maybe it would go down better if you put the slaw on it, just a thought take care and let me know if you try it again and how it goes!! Steph

Steph! I can tell you know what I'm talking about! That is the only way it is absolutely right, maybe with a little hot sauce too! I'm not supposed to have raw veggies yet so I didn't put any on it. I'll bet that's what's missing! Deb
