sipping too much water
Hi everyone--I am about 5 weeks post op -- I have only been drinking water which is good however I was wondering am I sipping too much? I sip sip sip throughout the day and have noticed that I can sip 3 sometimes 4 oz in 15-20 minutes--is that too fast? My doctor told me right out of surgery to sip 1oz every 20 minutes and increase it by an oz as tolerated--well that is what I have done and have had no pain or sense of fullness so am I to assume Im ok??? Lord knows I dont want to screw anything up thanks for any advice Lori
Hi Lori
When I ws early post-op (about 5 days) My surgeon told me I ws dehydrated and needed to drink more water. I told him my fears of drinking too much and expanding my pouch. He explained to me that liquids such as water take about 30 seconds to exit the stomach pouch. As long as you don't drink 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after you eat, you can drink as much as you are comfortable with. If you get that full feeling, then slow down, but that only happens when I forget and gulp my water. Hope that helps!

You are doing fine. I can easily drink 4 oz. of water in a very quick time. I don't sip per say anymore, I swallow small mouth fulls with no problem. Water starts to go out as soon as it goes in now that we are pretty much healed. Also, from what I have been told, you can't stretch you pouch with water, it either goes out the other end, or comes back up.
Here is one of those questions that you read and think... yeah, I was wondering about that.
I have thought the same thing, and worried just the same. I have noticed getting uncomfortable sometimes when I drink a little faster, but I was assuming that it should just flush right through... so I give myself a little time between swallows, but I generally drink small mouthfuls, too. I can't drink "continually" all day long, but I am able to get about 60-100 oz a day.
The day I was discharged, a girl was being admitted to the same wing returning for dehydration, I was afraid of that, so I've pushed the line to get the fluids in.
Thanks for asking, you never know who needs to see it also!
