odd question
Ok. I bought a protein bar today for lunch. I was psyched because it was 3oz and had 32 grams of protein and only 4 "net" carbs. It was good, but the 19 grams of sugar alcohols gave me dumping syndrome.
I didn't
but it did come out the other end pretty bad.
My question is, should I still count those 32 grams of protein or did I loose them?
Dawn

I would still count them, Dawn.
I don't think what happened to you was "dumping", but that is just my opinion. Some people are very sensitive to the effects of sugar alcohols, whether they have had WLS or not.
They don't effect me that way, but ...lots of people have the same issue you did! Maybe try half a bar next time?
Chele
Hi,
Sorry to hear you had an incident. My surgeon's overview speaks to sugar alcohols in great detail. Any word that ends in a 'tol' is also used as baby laxative. Sorbitol, morbitol, etc....
They say 'and baby, it works' so maybe that's what you are experiencing? The bar you ate sounds like a decent size so maybe the higher concentration caused a reaction? I guess one would have to test it and see
your individual reactions to a mint, piece of candy, protein bar, fake ice cream, etc....
I'll also toss out their rule that we are not allowed to talk about carbs as our absorption is completely different now and conventional rules no longer apply. (its all about protein and water, we know, we know...)
