Was I working out?

I am shocked! Everyday when I get home from work, I put on my work out clothes and walk around the neighborhood for 1.5 miles. I thought that I was doing so well. I just never broke a sweat. Well today a friend from work said that she wanted to come and go to the fitness center with me (that is here in my community). I usually don't work out that much in the fitness center but maybe 2 times a week and about 10 mins in the midst of my 1 1/2 mile walk (in the neighborhood). Well today, we strictly worked out in the fitness center. I was sweating like a pig. I know I walked faster on the treadmill than I do in the community (3.2 mi/hr on treadmill) - but I was soaked by the time that I was done on that. Then I committed to doing 1 minute on the elliptical (sp?). Those folks that do 1 1/2 minute or longer on that thing are just too siked. I was screaming after 45 seconds today. Anyway - I just don't know why my workout seemed to be more intense today than usual when I am doing the same amount. I know the faster walk would contribute some - but this was a BIG DIFFERENCE. Hopefully I will see a BIG DIFFERENCE in the scale tomorrow and that will give me more incentive to keep up with the intensity. Have a good weekend.

Sounds like you got a great workout. I would say walking faster made you sweat that always happens to me. Keep up the good work and you'll see amazing results. Carly

My parents walked 4 to 5 miles a day 6 days a week for 7 years. Then they found they had free gym membership thru their insurance co. They started going to a class for silver sneakers, their age group. They found the walking had done little to nothing for their overall strength and fitness. They couldn't even bounce a ball and catch it anymore. They couldn't sit in a chair without dropping the last few inches. They found muscles they never thought they had in 70 years. Now they are much better over all. The eliptical is the best machine in the world. I was doing 20 plus minutes on the treadmill, going up hills and at a good clip, then I went to the eliptical. I could only do 2 min. I worked at it and am now up to 11 min. as of this morning. The workout is much better and makes me feel better when I am done. I go to the gym 7 days a week. I do the eliptical or treadmill everyday and weights everyday. I work a different area alternating days, top one then bottome the next, then top again. Although walking is a good place to start, it doesn't do it all. For best results other exercise is needed.

I haven't really been working out at all...but before surgery I LOVED the elliptical machine..my advice, just do the minute and then keep building up. I went from like a minute to 45 in about a month. Just try to "beat" your old time. It gets easier I promise. Nicole

When you were walking you were definitely working out! Every little bit counts. The speed at which you were walking probably made the difference. I usually work on the elliptical for about 45mins each time. Believe me, you have to work at it! My first mistake on it was trying to go as fast as everyone else....go at your own speed even if it's really slow. Now I think it's easier than the treadmill. Just keep up the good work! April
