Since my surgery I have avoided carbs like the plague. I guess my head cold over powered my head and I ate mashed potatoes for supper!! only a few bites but they were good. Of course my guilt got to me, after only a few SMALL bites but Its one food i can say I tolerated. not to worry, it wont happen again for a while. ELSA

Up till a few weeks before surgery, thought I was having the band. I ended up having the rny, and am a bit confused. I saw the nut once but insurance doesnt cover it so I paid 75 dollers. I am a bit overwhelmed. I dont want to pay another $75, I will make a point to go to more support group meetings. I still dont know what im suppposed to eat. I saw the Dr this week and he has no restrictions, just whatever my body tolerates?? I wish I had more structure. Its a hard knock life for us.... Elsa

How do you coook artichoke? my mom used to boil them and dip them in mayonaise. But I assume boiling them takes out the nutrition, and I know there are better choices than mayo. Elsa

CM Have you ever microwave them I cut the bottoms to make them flat so they will stand up in a glass bowl or 8 x8 square dish. I put a couple of tablespoons of water on the bottom. You can season to your taste. Then cover with plastic wrap or if you have tupperware steamer or a glass lid to the bowl put in the microwave for several minutes until soft or to your taste. They tatse so good and you don't lose alot of nutrients --oops spelling? that way....................Good Luck suzan

I had RNY and our program is protein first, carbs second, fruits/veggies third. I have been told that carbs are vital for muscle retention (which is what prompts weight loss) and 'conventional rules' no longer apply. He will not entertain any discussions of no carb diets. I have high respect for my doctors program and offer that info as another RNY patient. I have some books, too, on RNY and can photo copy nutrition pages for you if that will help. They pretty much repeat what I said above with sugestions for food choices. Cheers, Tiffany

What's weird is that carbs like that were recommended in the beginning stages, at least in my case (my doc). At this point (eating anything and everything), I know I'm supposed to stay away from processed carbs and limit starchy veggies. I do eat baked potato and other things though. I try to keep my daily carb intake at 50gms, which may be higher than some. You'd think I'd have this thing figured out by now. But I digress... Elsa, is it THAT bad? What stance does your doctor take on the issue? (I know that Cara's doc wants her to have no carbs...are you in the same camp?) Chele

My doctor has no restrictions. His assistant who had surgery just a few months before me, drinks soda daily. I asked this week and they said whatever is tolerated. keep calories down, but didnt give me a goal... I might call and ask. Elsa
