Animal lovers, my baby Belle was injured

Hello to all *****ad. I am having a hard time with this and thought I would express my feelings by typing them and sharing with my OH family. We have a fantastic member of our family that joined us two years ago at the age of 8 weeks. Her name is Belle. She is a terrier/****er spaniel mix. She is the absolute BEST DOG in the world. We couldn't have been blessed with a better animal. She is smart, listens, very seldom breaks rules, potty trained (and can she hold it for sometimes looooooooong periods of time) easily and quickly. She is great with us, great with the kids. I mean, she is amazing. And we love her tremendously. I found out just what she means to me yesterday and how much I value her in our family. My husband and I were outside testing my son's new motor scooter and the door was accidentally left ajar, Belle wandered outside. She immediately went over to the dog next door to us (we live on a military base) and wanted to play. She is a very friendly, happy dog. Her tail was wagging, she was panting, ready for fun. Well, the dog next door wasn't. I heard the growl, I screamed to Belle to come here but she wanted to play. And the dog (a Sharpei, probably spelled incorrectly) growled, lunged and sunk her teeth into Belle's face, above and below her eye. She also punctured her on the neck somewhere in there. The dog drug her over to the porch and wasn't letting go. The owner finally came out, after hearing us scream and her daughter screaming for her mother, and got right in the middle and tried for several minutes to get her dog to let go. Finally, the dog did and then our dog bite her dog on the back leg, not wanting to let go. After several seconds Belle let go, my husband grabbed her collar and took her in the house. I was shaking, terrified, screaming, crying. I immediately went in to Belle and checked her. She was shaken, bleeding. I examined the best I could and applied peroxide to her wounds. It seems that she is fine today, thank God. But, I must tell you, while the dog was biting my baby, I truly thought she was going to die. It was a horrible, horrible experience. I'm glad that my 12 and 11 year old weren't home at the time. I think that it would've been so traumatic for them. I know how it's affected me. Just needed to share. Thanks for listening. Kim P.

Kim, I'm so sorry about the attack on your dog. I have 3 dogs and 3 cats so I know how you must feel. I also work for a veterinarian. I would suggest that you get Belle in to be examined. Even though it looks like you have her wounds treated she is prone to infection now. So many times we've seen dogs come in weeks after an attack that have developed abscesses from the wounds of another animal. The trauma of such an attack is very hard on a dog. I hope Belle is feeling better soon. Sharpei's are guard dogs, so your neithbors' dog was doing what he was bred to do (unfortunately). Give Belle a hug and kiss for me. Kathy

OMG! Kim how terrible. Have you taken Belle to the vet? How is she. I know I would be a wreck if something like that happened to my Hawley. My thoughts are with you and Belle. Regards and hugs, Ronna

Hi, Ronna. I haven't talked to you in quite some time. I took Belle to the vet yesterday and she said that she looks fine and is healing nicely and not to be concerned. Thank goodness!!! Thanks, Kim

What a horrifying experience for you AND for Belle. What's up with the other dog? Keep your kids away from it! I wouldn't feel safe with it anywhere around my home, with kids. How is Belle today? Did you have a vet check her out? Maybe they'd give a round of prophylactic antibiotics. Chele

Hi, Chele. The other day is, apparently as the vet told me, is a natural born space protector. A sharpei loves their space and is protective of it. Belle, wandering over there for some social time, invaded her space and she was aggressive. I definately plan to keep my children away from that dog. The owner, we're vey friendly with, says that she is aggressive with other dogs but is fine with children. I'm certainly not willing to take that chance though. Belle is good today. I took her to the vet yesterday and since she is up to date on all of her shots, they said that she is fine and is healing nicely. Thanks for responding. Kim
