I emailed my nutritionist about the quantity of food I have been craving and have been able to eat. This is part of her reply: *************** I am so glad that you are keeping in touch, first of all let me tell you what our predictions are after surgery, then you can tell if you are doing ok or not. You shouldn´t expect less than 157 lbs in a year, in other words your GOAL is 157 lbs in a year! In 3 months you should be 273 lbs, that means that you should lose 77 lbs In 6 months you should be 234 lbs, that means that you should lose 116 lbs In a year, your GOAL is 157 lbs, that means that you should lose 193 lbs NOW, some patients eat and tolerate more than others, IN YOUR SITUATION IF YOU ARE EATING MORE,YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFULL WITH THE QUALITY OF THE FOOD. 100 grs of protein is alot. 50 grs is the recommendation. The rest is the same, I think you are overeating a little bit. DO NOT WORRY IF YOUR QUALITY OF FOOD IS HEALTHY. It is hard to exceed on NATURAL FRUITS, like proteins and vegetables. *************** Does 50 g protein seem right? I mean, the Isopure I drink has 40g protein alone. Why am I buying this expensive supplement if I don't need it? Also, I was 370 on january 1st and 350(ish - in Mexico they weigh in Kilos and my conversion wasn't perfect) Is it reasonable I would go from 350 to 273 in 3 months? 77 pounds seems like a LOT. ANd no way will I reach that goal, I'm 307 now. Just asking for your opinions, I know everyone is different. Bridget

Bridget, Im sorry you are struggling with this. Im not bragging, but I guess I was one of the lucky ones that no longer has an appettite(sp). But my doc told me all I needed was between 50-60 grams protein. We are all different and I dont see how they can just give you these #'s and say you should be there by a certain date. Thats insane! Sorry I couldnt be more help. Good luck. kristi

Thanks Kristi I had no hunger for the first full month. Now at 2 months it's come back. It doesn't help that I stay home all day, and am constantly feeding the kids. Bridget

Every person is different, so that is why you will find inconsistancies from different nutritionists. I am supposed to get no less then 70g of protein a day, yet can not have more then 40g of carbs... but that is for ME. Not everyone needs the same program. We all started in different places, ya know. I would follow what your nutritionist suggests for you. I am 3 months out and have lost a little over 50 pounds... so yes, to me 77 pounds does seem like a lot. But, still I would try to follow her/his plan for you and hopefully you will reach the goals they set forth.

Hi Bridget! I'm glad your nutritionist it at least conversing with you According to my nut, I have to have 80 grams of protein- it has to do with my bone structure and size. I'll find the paperwork at home and see if I can find anymore info out for you. 73 pounds does seem lke alot in three months, but I've lost 75 post op and my anniversary is April 6. I have a huge amount to lose, so I'm just waiting for it all to slow down. Personally, I think its falling off a bit too fast right now, but I'll take it anyway I can get it. Maybe add more fruit to your diet if you're still hungry? Or some more solid protein? Unfortunately, I don't have an appetite anymore and have to remind myself to eat, so I can't really help you on the hunger aspect. Don't feel bad about not meeting the 73 pound loss if you don't meet it, we all lose differently and jus****ch! When I'm in my stall, you'll be whizzing right on by lol. Good luck! *~*Jaci*~*

I also have a huge amount to lose. I believe I am one of the biggest gals on this board pre-op. I was 370 jan 1st and 350 day of surgery. I'm 5'6", so about average height. 50 g protein seems so small to me! I am trying to keep my snacking as low fat and carb free as I can. I have roasted chicken and turkey pastrami to snack on. Chees is OK but I get sick of it quick, lol. I haven't tried fruit except some watermelon and 4 slices of banana in my cereal. I get fatigued very easily on sugars, even natural sugars. Bridget

You and me both sister! I'm 5'10 and was 393 pre-op. The highest in my life, I was embarrassed and upset when I saw that number. Only SEVEN pounds from 400. Wow, I really let my self go! 50 sounds super small. According to my paper work, 5'6" and average build requires 74-93 grams of protein... but there is a wide range for all body types- 68-102. I don't know what my frame is, but I've been doing a nice middle ground according to my nut at 80... I should probably try to up it a bit. Unfortunately, I can't do deli meats to save my life! They just sit in my pouch and make me gurgle Weird, but I can hande marbled cheese the best. I can eat that for days- HATED cheese all by itself pre-op! WEIRD! Keep up your awesome work, chickadee. You lost 20 pounds pre-op in a short time, maybe your bod's just catching up to the whole idea of you wasting away to a skinny minnie! *~*Jaci*~*

Bridget Iam glad that your medical team is responding to your requests. Personally my medical team told me since I lost alot of weight before my surgery date my after surgery lost is going to be slower........Also my medical team keeps reminding all of us when we attend are support groups that no one should try to compare themselves to anyone else...Everyone is unique in there own way and we all have different health issues........They say it is better to lose a average weight loss then lose to fast.....That way your skin has a chance to bounce back......... I wish there was a way to just go in to the hospital have the surgery and wake up the next day really skinny.......But no chance......Hang in there... Oh by the way I was told 70 to 80 grams of protein daily. Which I usually get around 63 to 78 daily..... Take care..... Suzan

Thanks Suzan. I was surprised when the nut emailed me those goals. Even without cheating at all, 77 pounds in 3 months is a challenge! And if you don't meet the goal, you get discouraged. Add a husband to the mix who has lost 100 pounds in the same time it's taken me to lose 65 and it's down right depressing. I am confused with the protein, because when I was in Mexico, they did reccomend the Isopure 40g protein drinks. In fact, they gave us several to help up get through the post-op days before we flew home. But if I'm only supposed to consume 50g protein a day, then they aren't really necessary. I have emailed her back asking if I should drop the Isopure and the extra 170 calories they add, and I'm waiting for her reply.
