THERAPY: when & why do you...?

I was very moved and helped by the responses last week to the therapy post (an brillo idea from brave Jen Jen , who had previously asked about therapy for our food issues). I found the replies so very interesting and intuitive. This question was because of some of those thought provoking replies: When & why do you eat alone? Well, for me I eat when my toddler naps. I tend to snack (graze really). Sometimes I even wait to have my lunch alone after she goes down rather than eat with her. I don't think this is a good thing. I think I should be sitting with her and modeling healthy, normal eating. Instead I often wait and then I can be alone with my other true love: food. I've often wondered if I eat alone because I'm embarassed about how much and how fast I eat (used to--better now)--and also about the things I eat when alone(crap-almost always sweets). I also think it's my down time-- I'm usually just home from work, child is down, house is quiet and so I use the food to calm myself and start to relax before baby is up and husband is home. I'm not sure about all this---but those are my best thoughts.... now, what about you?!?!?!?!

Catherine, your city is Sunny CA? I'm in San Francisco and it's pouring - seems like it has been for over a month. Anyway, good question. I know for an absolute fact the reason that I eat alone is because I am alone most of the time. My husband and I don't eat together hardly ever - we're just not on the same time. But you made a comment about being embarrassed at how much we used to eat and that hit home. I remember buying candy bars and being embarrassed about the fact that I was buying them. I would make a comment like "he'll appreciate that hershey bar" and I guess I was naive enough to think the checker really wasn't thinking I was a pig and was going to eat it myself. And I didn't buy the small hershey bars - they were the big ones. Sometimes I'd buy graham crackers and marshmallows to make it look like we were making smores.

I have to comment on what Gwen just said. I used to do the same thing. I would go to McDonald's and of course a value meal was not enough so I would play dumb and say something like "What did he say he wanted?" before I ordered that extra double cheeseburger. Preop I loved to eat alone. My job was 3 miles down the road and I got a 90 min lunch break so I piled it in. Most times I would make a special trip to buy lunch so DH wouldn't notice disapearing food. Postop I don't mind eating publicly anymore. But then again I haven't eaten with anyone outside of my family. I am just so concious of my food choices now that I am proud of what I eat. Dawn

Hi Cathy! I was so like Gwen and Dawn! When order pizza or at the drivethrough, I'd act like others were with me or I was on a call- how embarassing!!! Now, I still eat alone sometimes due to the cray scheules my family has, but when I eat with others, I'm not ashamed of what and how much I eat, I'm very proud of myself and I let others know it too Just some don't know why lol!

This is a good question. I used to have alot of guilt issues over what I would buy. I would wonder if people were watching what I bought and thinking "no wonder she's fat". Even when I was dieting. I still feel that way some what, but not as much. I eat alone 90% of the time due to my schedule. I don't really enjoy eating with my family because I eat so little and they are always still eating when I finish. Leeanne
