I hope you made it through the staff meeting! Your post got me thinking (scary as I am just home from vacation in the Florida Keys)... How is it that going to a liquid diet will get you back on track? Why did so many reply that they sailed through there days while sustaining life solely on protein powder (Optifast, etc.)? I recognize your good intentions, and praise your for your commitment...however, I know that you are smart and strong and determined so I offer this: Getting back on track includes taking control of your eating, your choices, your portions...and your life. Getting on track means getting your head and your heart in the game...and the game always includes food, because it is food that sustains us (along with love/friendship/quality shoes/really good bras). Liquid diets are not about lifestyle change. And lifestyle changes are those things that get us back on track. So...what am I really saying? Get beyond the diet mentality. Rise above what gave us comfort in the past...when we were fat (or fatter). Recognize and gather your every ounce of your inner strength and make the choices that will help you reach your goals. Make the choices that will get you where you want to be today, tomorrow and into the future. There is no secret. It's all about lifestyle. And nobody can do it but you! Continued success in the best of health, Karen

Thank you for your reply, I hope that doing liquids for a day would break the strong hold that food has, that my mind would be able to say, okay, you won't die if you don't spend your entire day obsessing and worrying about food. I am hoping that when I do eat again that I will not have the roaring carb cravings, the sweet cravings, and maybe that is not reality, but I felt the need to try this to get back on track....I guess we'll see if it was successful. I got through the staff meeting, it was horrible as expected. I sat there sipping on my achiev one and not thinking about what food I was going to eat to make my discomfort better....I went home, made a big pot of spaghetti, fried a dozen chicken wings, fixed my familys plates and sat them on the table, grabbed a diet pepsi and swirled out of the room....I gotta tell you, that was empowering!

Forgot to ask this question when I answered your post: Is it safe to just drink protein if it adds up to 1,000 calories. That would be 8 drinks a day @184 grams of protein. More than what is needed protein wise, but a lot to get in 1,000 calories. Would the body react to not having food; can it be done for a week or days; and would the hair start falling out or skin get funky because of lack of something that comes from food. I sure liked Optifast, but a friend also took it and skimped on her servings a day, only having 4 instead of 5 so she could stay on it longer, and her hair started falling out. So........ what would be the answer. Is 184 gr. of protein at 1,000 calories a day enough to lose on? Hope someone knows from experience if they have tried it. Thanks. Marilyn :idea

I am not entirely sure about your case because I am sure that everyone has different protein needs. I try to keep my protein at 100 grams, so I drank 5 achieve ones at 20 grams of protein each, and drank water and decaf coffee at other times. I also exercised 2 sessions at 30 minutes each. I kept the sessions low intensity because I wasn't sure if I would feel any different or light headed or any thing else. I felt fine all day and I feel fine now. I think that as long as the protein is supplemented it should be okay but that is not figuring in any other medical problems so it is best to check with a doctor before trying this at home...I sure did. I only plan on doing this for a day, because I don't know the effect of doing this on a long term basis, even as a new post op, I only did this for a week or so before going on puree...mmm those were the days LOL.

My game plan when I get off track is to eat dense protein (steak, pork chops, chicken) only for 2-3 days. It takes the cravings away and I don't feel deprived. I'm not saying this is the right answer for everybody, but it's a lot easier than a liquid diet for me.
