Topic: RE: Roll call We have 13 on A team board I know we have more
Am I too late for Roll call? I hope not...
Well, I am thankful for this board and do lurk more then I post...
My name is Shakeira. I am a stay at home mom to 3 kids. Ages 9,7, and 5. We home school and are a part of an home schooling co-op. It keeps my time pretty busy. I live in a very rural town (1150 people). My husband works for Immigration and we have been married 10 years. I've had a weight problem since puberty. At 15 years old I was 50 lbs over weight and it just continued from there.
My highest weight was 335 lbs. I look back now and recount that as one of my lowest moments in my life. Surgery weight was 312 and I am now 210 lbs. That is a total loss 102 lbs from surgery and 125 from highest weight. (every pound counts!)
I don't often feel like a success and wonder lately if I failed my RNY since I haven't lost any weight to speak of in nearly 5 months. I'm not skinny, but I'm not obese either. Well, actually according to the BMI chart I am obese.. I can't tell you here where I would like to put those bmi charts....... up some antiquated doc's _____!
Anyways.. I feel healthy and strong. People tell me I look "so good". I wish I saw it. Like a lot of people on here, I've grown pretty unsatisfied with myself. It's awful to feel as bad about yourself as you did 125 lbs heavier.
So..... to combat this I'm trying to remember why I really had this surgery. It wasn't to get skinny and have an amazing figure, but to be healthy! And even if those stupid BMI charts say I can't possibly be healthy.. I am!
I can run, I can jump on the trampoline with my kids, I can ride my bike for miles without stopping. And more then anything, I feel full! I never ever ever felt full before RNY. I would eat and be hungry again 30 minutes later.
I have my health and my youth back. Concentrating on those things encourages me and keeps me going on and living a healthy lifestyle.
So I guess you could say I'm a slow/wayward looser... but I'm going to keep going! And even if I never reach "skinny" I will at least know I am healthy.
that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Topic: RE: Sunday Weigh In
Well, still around 210. I haven't seen 205 since June... grrrr
But oddly enough clothing is still getting loose on me. With the 5 lb gain.. I'm still wearing smaller clothing. I'm pretty happy.
I do notice I'm way more sensitive to sugar and fats now then I was before. I dump a lot now. No fun!
Anyone else notice their portions have gotten bigger all of a sudden? The other day I was able to eat an entire turkey burger with bun and lettuce and cheese. And it seems that some days I can only finish half of it. Does the pouch stretch during the day and tighten at other times?
I swear there are some days (esp during TOM) that I can eat and eat and eat, and then there are other days where I can hardly finish a cup of cottage cheese. What's up with that? lol
I guess this should be on a different post.. sorry!
You all are doing soooo awesome!

Topic: RE: Marathon??
Marcia has inspired me to start working towards a marathon Had a major set back when I had shoulder surgery in march and a manipulation 2 weeks ago I am gonna do a swimathon and I was swimming over a mile 72 laps = 1 MILE before my shoulder surgery but I am happy to report my shoulder is getting better and shouLd be back into training mode w/in a month, this might be helpful for anyone wanting to try a marathon http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/directory/index.asp?catid=1008 I decided to do one when I turn 50 in Jan, My logic is I wanted to do something I could not do when I was in my 40's. I wanted to be below 200 in my 40's goal reached took me awhile but I did it.. I was so inspired by Dana Tores who at age 41 will be competing at the olympics 5 th time she even had shoulder surgery in oct. She is my mentor for older age and post shoulder surgery.
Good Luck

Topic: RE: Soda....
Soda made me 295 lbs fat .. I was a soda-aholic and I mean it was bad addiction and when I went off soda I never thought I could do it and the withdrawls were so bad..I use to drink 2 route 44 regular rootbeers a day My doc said soda is the root of all weight gain.. I tried a few times to drink soda and all it does is make me vomit like a volcano .. No thanks.. I do not like soda now it just makes me feel so sick.I am so glad to be free from that poison.
I rather drink milk than soda ..

Topic: RE: Soda....
I don't know about you.. but diet coke makes me crave sugar and food like crazy!!! Fake sugars trick your body into producing insulin it doesn't need and when that happens, your appetite increases. Before surgery I gained around 50 lbs by just drinking Diet Dr. Pepper. I would drink it like water and my appetite opened up and I couldn't seem to get full.
Now the occasional diet soda I have, I notice it as a trigger and I try to be very careful. I also read on many different websites that drinking carbonated products will not stretch your pouch, but can be very uncomfortable. The biggest danger of the carbonation is that it sucks the Calcium from you bones.. and that's a battle we are already fighting after RNY. It might not stretch your pouch, but it is very bad for our bodies.. with or without RNY.
Here is some stuff I got off of OH about drinking soda..
1. All non-clear soft drinks contain phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid bonds to minerals you ingest - for example zinc, magnesium and most importantly calcium. Since these minerals are bonded to the phosphoric acid, your body cannot absorb them. Instead, they are simply expelled. (You "pee" them out.) So much for those vitamins you're taking, huh? (Studies show that this is why 20 and 30 year olds are developing osteoporosis nowadays.)
2. Also, carbonated beverages have been shown to increase appetite. (Post-ops drinking carbonated beverages are more than twice as likely to gain their weight back. I don't know where my surgeon/NUT get that statistic, but I believe it.)
3. Carbonated beverages are stomach irritants, even if it is not to the point that you can "tell". The body fights stomach irritants by using one of the best natural antacids it has - calcium. Where does it get it? Your blood. Your blood then realizes that its calcium level is too low, so it pulls calcium from the biggest source around - your bones. Ergo, your bones get weaker and more brittle.
4. Carbonated beverages have been linked to certain types of cancers. (There is a strong correlation between ingesting carbonated beverages and esophageal cancer.)
5. It can be hard at times for post-ops to get in all the fluids recommended without adding "useless, good-for-nothing filler" in there as well.
