Im new and this website has been a life saver in getting information.  My surgery is Aug. 12th and I cant wait.  The one thing that worries me is that I quit smoking 9 days ago cold turkey (yeah for me) and I worry about the pre-op testing.  I dont know if they even do a nicotine test but Im hoping if they do I will be clean by then.  My pre-op is Aug 6th which will be 7 weeks smoke free. Anybody have any advice?

Congrats on your upcoming..  I (ahem) smoke.  I quit 3 weeks before my surgery and tested clean.  LOL  So you should be ok.  Alot of surgeons do test for nicotine and I know of some that do cancel surgeries because of it.  So hang in there.  YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool, thats what I thought. Ive been googling nicotine to see how long it stays in your system. My pre-op is Aug 6th so I'll drink tons of water a couple of days prior just to be safe.  Thanks.

weird.  i never even knew that some surgeons tested for nicotine.   this pretty much answers the question:  http://www.netwellness.org/question.cfm/41921.htm you should be fine.  congrats on kicking the habit!

Thanks everyone for your responses, I feel confident that If they do test me I will be fine.  I havent touched a cigg in 10 days and havent even been around any smokers.   I am so excited and wish my surgery was sooner.

My surgeons won't even look at our file or schedule first appointment until you are smoke-free for SIX months.  I've done everything I need to do just waiting until July 21st for the six full months to be up!  Congratulations on quitting.  It gets easier and easier as each day goes by!

Deb the main thing the doctors are worried about is how you will react to the Anesthesia as it can effect your lungs. I quit 8 weeks before surgery and had problems and yet I know some who still smoked at the time of surgery. You might want to talk with your doctor about their protocol or it should be in the handbook you got from them. I am not sure who your doctor is but Felix/Swartz is strict about smoking where as Boone/Higa and Juarezz is more relaxed on the subject.
