Restrictive Lung Disease?????

Hey guys,
I had an appointment today with my PCP. I went because I was having problems when I wake from a nights sleep. When I was wake up I feel like I have been sleeping with a pillow on my face. I feel like I have to cough to "open" my lungs or take several deep breaths to get going in the morning. This happened a few years back before I lost weight. I then lost weight and it went away now that my lovely friend "the weight" has come back so have my symptoms. I had a sleep study when this happened before and did not have sleep apnea but my O2 saturation went down into the 80's.

Today the doctor said that he thought I had Restrictive Lung Disease. He did not mention sleep apnea at all. Has anyone else ever heard of Restrictive Lung Disease?? He is sending me to get pulmonary function test and then we will go over the results together (hopefully soon). I was just wondering if anyone else has this or ever heard of this before. He also told me that if I do have it there is nothing he can do to treat it. He said that the only way to treat it is to lose weight. He said that my weight is basically pushing down on my ribs preventing my lungs from expanding completely while I sleep.

Just wanted to know everyones thoughts on this. Thanks.

Nathalie

Nathalie,

I haven't had this but I just wanted to let you know that I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.  I did have a pulmonary function test and it was not a big thing, just blowing into a machine. I have asthma, so pre-op they wanted that study done.

Hugs,
Barb

Thanks for keeping me in your prayers. I was told a few years ago that I had asthma so we will see what they tell me when the test is done. I am kinda hoping that Restrictive Lung Disease sounds worse than it actually is.

Thank you for all of the support. I will for sure keep everyone on the board updated with anything regarding this. Someone might find it helpful if they are having the same symptoms.

I had sleep apnea 120 pounds ago!  I used to snore like a trucker and would stop breathing.  My hubby would wake up and elbow me to get me to breathe again.  Since I have lost the weight, I don't even snurgle (tiny snores) at all.  All is peaceful and quiet on the home front and I wake up refreshed and ready to hit the road.  From someone who couldn't function without my mega jolt of caffeine in the morning to someone who hasn't had caffeine in 6 months and is bright eyed and semi-cheery first thing in the morning is great.

Hang in there.  I'll say some prayers for you!

I do know the feeling of getting a full nights rest and waking up tired. I could probably sleep all day and then sleep all night if I was allowed. Over the past year I have become a major Coffee person. I look forward to just waking up refreshed and waking up without the feeling that my lungs are closed. Thanks for the Prayers, everyone could use one now and again!

Nathalie....I never had it or apena...well not bad enough to be tested....but I just wanted to let you know that I will keep you in my thoughts that you will get surgery to help with the situation.

Nathalie, this happens in some MO people, depending on where the extra weight is located. All the more reason to have wls, as it will improve and eventually go away when you lose weight. If your pcp is right and this is what you have, nothing will help other than weight loss.
On the DS forum there is someone who posts frequently who had exactly this problem, only worse. She posts as Elizabeth N. She went from being told that she couldn't have wls because she was so high risk, to being told to have wls or die. She had the DS, has lost weight and is doing great now. I'm sure she wouldn't mind if you were to contact her and ask about her experiences. Tell her I sent you!
