HAIRSTYLE'S

Hi, I haven't been on here in a really long time due to complications with my Surgery. I had it December 19th, 2008.  Now my hair is falling out at 3-1/2 months.

My question is, I know why it is, I have read millions of ways to try and help it regrow and all that, but what about a hairstyle in the mean time.  And I wanted to dye my gray hair out!  Should I just wait until it stops falling out? Or is coloring it ok?  Should I have a professional do it?  Alot of people are saying don't touch my hair at all with scissors, color or anything until it stops falling out. There is no way to that I can do that. I can hang without color that's not a big deal, but I need to do something with my style. The shortest I would like to go is a bob.

Just want to know everyone's opinion, or see what other ideas and what other things everyone else did.

Thanks!
Terri
PS I HAVE LOST 55lbs so far!! Even with the complications!
This is so exciting!

Congratulations on your weight loss! That is awesome!

But as far as the hair goes, I am a big believer in don't dye your hair yourself. Let the professional do it! ALWAYS!! You need to find a good colorist that would be able to give you good advice. You are becoming a new woman, so why not get a new do, too! Spend the money and have your hair done professionally. You will feel so much better!

Good Luck,

Hi Terri
My 2cents worth? I would not add any chemicals to your hair at this time....the hair folicles are already under stress from the rapid weight loss and recovery from surgery.  If you need ideas how to style your hair, by all means, go to a good quality salon and have them give you ideas.  I use Nutri-ox hair system...it helps to stimulate the hair folicles...alot like the Nioxin product that others talk about here.  I also use a voluminizing mousse before styling.

sorry to hear you had complications; but what a wonderful weight loss in spite of!! Congratulations!

Hi Terri,
Being a hairstylist I would agree..dont do it yourself the profesional colors are much better for your hair than "box color"..Anyway my advice is to find a NICE salon in your area and go in for a free consultation (most salons do this) that way they can talk with you to see what you are ready for . They will let you know if they think your hair can handle it because its thier butt on the line lol. While you are there look at some books for a new style. That way you are not commited to anything and if you like what you hear then GO FOR IT. Well good luck.

Terri,

First off, congratulations on your weight loss, way to go.

I too am losing hair but not in huge amounts.  My sylist and I talked about all of this before surgery, so I have followed her advice.  I have always colored my own hair and she felt it wouldn't hurt to continue, just try to not do it too soon.  She also recommended Nioxin shampoo and conditioner which I bought at a Beauty Supply outlet $20.00 for each big bottle.  It seems to really have helped slow the loss down.  She also along with my PCP recommended Biotin which I take 1000 mg per day.

As far as hairstyles, she has cut mine right above the shoulder, gave it a little layering  for volumne and has given me a little thicker bangs to cover up the thinning.   I see her about every 6 weeks  which seems to work well for trims.

Hope this helps,
Barb

Hey......I take Biotin - 5000 mcg two times per day.  I have not lost a single strand of hair.  In fact, my hair is thicker now than it has been in the last 30 years!!!!!  4 weeks after starting the biotin BEFORE surgery I noticed little new nubbies of hair all over my scalp.  My stylist is thrilled to pieces with the change in my hair and she's been working with it for the last 10 years.  She started joking with me before surgery that if my hair got any thinner, she'd have to sart charging me 1/2 price for services!!!

Up your biotin!  What your body doesn't need, you urinate out!

Thank you everyone for your advice!! Sometimes it gets so overwhelming!  One more question, I bought Biotin from walmart, and the pill was way too big!  What brand do you buy, where do you buy it, and how do you take it(take the pill apart, cut in half, etc....)?

Hi Terri,

I had really long hair before surgery and when it started falling out I had it cut to about shoulder length. What I found is it didn't seem so bad when the strands that were coming out weren't 3 feet long. LOL Now, my hair has gone wavy and is thicker than ever. It only came out for about 2.5 months.

I agree, go to the salon, get a consult and follow thier advise. It's what they do.

Good luck and congrats on the weight loss.
Sue
