I went to Valley Care in Pleasanton Ca yesterday and the psychotherapist said I might not be a good candidate because I have a reading/writing problem (dyslexia) and I don’t have a good memory of thing that happened 20 years ago. Anyone have the same experience or any thoughts?

Other than what  i said, she said i need to be able to read food lables, and would if someone is not there to help

Why would that make you not a good candidate?

I'd get an explanation and/or a second opinion.

Never heard of such a thing, sounds like there is more to your story than what you are telling us.  Dyslexia would not cause you to not be able to have surgery nor would your memeory.  I can't remember what I ate for breakfast not to even think of what happened 20 years ago, other than I was 20 years younger.

i am 41 years old and she had asked me about high school. There is not much more to tell thats it. Being completly honest what would i have to hide?

Girlfriend,
You don't pull any punches do you?  Very straightforward.  Not a bad thing.

WTF????????? You must be missing some MAJOR details in this story! Sorry, you might want to explain more if you want some answers from people on these boards!

I find your story interesting.  Personally I believe there is more to this that you are stating, and you are looking for something that I personally nor too many others here on this board can help you with.  To be successful with this surgery you have to be honest not only with yourself but to those around you.  Not saying you, but those who do not enter into this surgery with the knowledge of what it is all about and the changes that one will have to make in their lives and can be honest to not only themselves but to those around them, won't succeed and if this is what your psycotherapist believes I would have to say right now this is not the right time for you to have surgery.  This surgery or any bariatric surgery is not for those who are not willing to take a look at their lives and what got them in the situation to need the surgery in the first place.  I wish you the best of luck and until you are ready you should not have the surgery.

Hi-

Dr Lee was my surgeon.  I went through the whole process at Pleasanton also.  Not sure which psych you saw.  The one I saw was very easy to talk to and very nonjudgemental.  Were you able to take the long  multiple choice test they give you?  There were a few trick questions in that, asked one way and then the same question worded differently 10 questions later.  If thats where the problem was then I would request having them give you the test orally.  I have a daughter with learning disabilities and all of her tests in school were given orally.

I will tell you also, I have heard both the nut and the receptionist say that almost everyone who can pay or has insurance to cover is a candidate.  Unless there is a major health or mental issue.  So talk to them and get a better explanation.  You do say the psch said you "might" not be a good candidate...she didn't say you wouldn't be.  Besides they have their Friday meetings where all of them, the psych, surgeon, nurse and nut make the decision as to who qualifies.  It isn't just the psych.

Don't count yourself out yet!

I SPOKE WITH HARVA KENDRICK. IT WAS THE LONG QUESTIONNAIRE THAT I APPARENTLY ANSWERED WRONG, OR NOT TO HER "APPROVAL"
