Lab Work Question

I got the results back from my labs.  All looks great (especially my glucose levels which are now at an 87 instead of the ugly 135 they were pre-surgery).  However, I have two that are registering Low and I don't know what that means.  Monocytes are at a 3 (normal is 4-13) and the other is an iron I believe......UIBC is a 147 (normal range 150 - 375).

Anybody have any insite as to what these are and what the levels mean?

Monocyte are white blood cells that clean up infection and bacteria they only account for 5-10% of your total WBC
and UIBC is unsaturated binding capcity, the amt of iron that can attach to a cell Meaning your cell is carrying alittle more iron then normal

Thank you !  I even found (on web md) that the Mono levels "normal" vary from lab to lab and web md has a low normal being 3 and high 7.  so........ doc will let me know tomorrow.  Thanks for responding.

Hi Maureen,

I'm no doctor but I was looking up stuff from my lab results and  then I saw your post. here is what I read about your mono...

Mono is an abbreviation for monocytes. This white blood cell helps the neutrophils fight infections. High monocyte counts indicate infection. It is unlikely that there will be no monocytes and a differential with zero monocytes does not indicate any specific ailment.

I couldn't find anything about your UIBC.

Thanks for the info.  I suspect that they, along with everything else is good and just a minor difference from lab to lab.  Doctor will let me know tomorrow.  Best part is I am feeling fantastic and my glucose levels are down in the normal range and under 100!!!!

Morning Mo
Can't help with the 'monocytes' but I asked my doc about several people coming up with low iron labs...he said that it was perfectly normal...most people will come up low at first blood draw. He said if a person was 'too low', the surgeon would adjust either the calcium w/D or increase the D with a separate pill.  Since we get some D from the sun...maybe you should tell hubby you need to spend more time out in that new boat!?  LOL  Great excuse I think ^_^

Actually I just got back from the doctor and he said my labs are great.  The "low" levels are because I have HIGH iron and that's the "receptors".  He said to not worry about it.  I take a D supplement 2x a day.  Actually I take........my chewable multi vitamins, my Citrical Calcium petite with D, Vit C, Vit D, Cranberry, Biotin, and a stool softener 2x a day.  Doc said I was doing FANTASTIC and didn't want to see me back for another 6 months!
