Hi All --

I had my 1 week follow-up and my doc says that my protein is low - 12

Im getting in at least 100g of protein daily in the form of protein supplements. I take in no more than 20g at a time since my nut told me that our bodies can not absorb more than 25-30g at a time.

What can i do to get my numbers up?

TIA

O

Hi there,

First of all, just want to say it was nice meeting you.  It looks like you are doing really well and based on what you are saying in your post, I'm thinking your protein levels should go up.  You just had surgery and maybe that has something to do with it.  Don't get discouraged!

I read that ur drinking - protein bullets- do they come in "shots"? Most of those are collegen based and have low levels of essentail protein (that's my nutritionist talking). i'm told to look 4 whey protein or whey isolate (predigested protien) , but u should check it out w/ ur nutritionist. maybe he/she could give u more info.  good luck-

This may be a dumb question but did your surgeon do blood work and then told you this? I sure hope this is the case. Did he tell you why this was the case? If you use the protein shots that are whey protein (can get them at wal mart they have 24 grams of whey proteins and this are what I take if I find I am run a like behind for the day,
I would ask your Nut what you should do.

Good Luck

Naomi -- i meant to ask while I was with all you pro's yesterday but forgot -- got too excited! LOL!

This is the number from the bloodwork... I get my 100g from whey isolate protein shots...
I was just wondering if there was anything else I should be doing...

Good morning!

If you are taking the whey protein, then for right now while you are on liquids (yes?), I think you are doing ok, but wondering if maybe you can supplement with something else.   I think you are diluting it in the water so you can drink it, right?  Maybe that has something to do with it., especially since right now you are on liquids.  Did they also have you on liquid diet pre-op?  I'm kind of grasping at straws, but I'd call your nut and let her know and get some imput from her.

*hugs*  Naomi

Yep I think I am going to call tomorrow to see what she says. From some of the other posters, I have gathered that my Vit A may be low too and that could cause my protein to be low... I'm sure I'll get this worked out soon! Thanks so much!! :)

whey isolate protein shots are not the right kind of protein you want to take b/c they are still collagen based. I was told not to take these b/c all of my docs RNY's who did their labs would show low protein. You should try "Nectar" brand protein shakes they come in different flavors and are not thick like some shakes.
