Hair loss/breakage,, 3 years out? Anyone else?
im over 3 years out and have noticed now for a while, that my hair is coming out again,, and now there are parts that look like I have breakage. My hair is long, and before surgery was super thick,, and with the normal hair loss I had after surgery, I still had decent hair thickness.
Now its getting thinner and now Im starting to worry. I take my vitamins and eat decent,, could it be that maybe im not getting enough protein?

Hi Marie,
My hair was long, thick and wavy pre-op. Lost a lot post op and it came back but never as thick and it is ringlette curly.
I'm 5 years out and lost a lot of hair again...i guess about a year ago. It was definitely my protein intake for me. It is coming back again, but stick straight. As you up your protein, remember that the cycle of hairloss takes a while to stop. But if you are like me, you see the signs of regeneration after a while. I had to cut bangs in my hair because the new hair stuck straight up like a halo around my head.

I am 2 1/3 years out, and mine is thinning too. When you say you upped your protein, how much do you get in a day? I always try for at least 60 grams because Dr. Chin said 40 was enough, but maybe I need even more. Marie, how much are you getting in a day? I hate finding my hair on the bathroom floor; it just hadn't happened to me before.

Im not sure on my exact protein intake, so thats part of the problem. I just automatically eat protein at every meal and that seemed to work for a while but obviously not anymore. I really love the Unjury protein shakes and one other that is Banana flavored,, Im going to get back on them and see what happens.
Realizing it will take a while for the hair loss process to stop.
Im also going to go ahead and make an appointment tomorrow so I can get my labs done,, that cant hurt either.
Like you, I cant stand the hair I leave around the house,, or in my car,, shoot my husband even was driving to work one morning and pulled two strands of my hair out of his shirt! LOL

I haven't had my surgery yet, I'm having my pre op appointment tomorrow (yea) but this is a big concern for me too. As the beautician says, I have baby fine hair and a lot of it except it's thinning on top. I'm scared of losing any more I'll be bald!!
Everything I have read and in the 24 weeks of classes that I was required to take, I've learned we need 70 - 80 grams of Protein per day.
Any other suggestions to help with this??

Hi Theresa,
My doctor wanted me to have more than that in the beginning, during my first year, and I struggled to get in enough/ I hated all kinds of liquid protein and I couldn't eat the bars for a very long time. Now I get most of mine from milk products, but I am trying to do a chicken/fish dish at least once a day. I wish I could make myself do it twice a day, but I just love dairy more. But if I want to save my hair, I will do whatever it takes.
I had begun washing with Nioxin, but after a few months, my hair loss seemed to be getting worsr, so now I am back to my old shampoo and upping my protein. I still have enough hair, but I worry.
Good luch with all you have ahead of you,

TAKE BIOTIN!!!! I have (had) super thin baby fine hair before surgery and was advised to take 5000 mcg of Biotin twice a day. Within 6 weeks I noticed new baby hair growing. My hair is now thicker and softer than it has been in the last 30 years! Even my long-term hair dresser is amazed as is my PCP. I will be taking Biotin for the rest of my life!!!! It's cheap - $8 at WalMart for a bottle of 120 capsules.
