why is my protein shake making me sick?

I have been drinking the same protein shake since I came home from the hospital. It's Muscle Milk. Never had a problem until the last few days. Everytime I drink it I get sick to my stomach and feel bad for about 15-20 minutes after. Now granted I am so tired of it I can't stand it. The other day I tried another shake called "oh Yeah" tried it a couple of times and the same thing happened.

Any ideas?

It sounds like you might be dumping. Try changing to another protein powder that has less sugar. See if that helps. Good luck on your weight loss journey.

That's what I thought too. But, why would it just start now? It didn't do it before.

Not exactly sure. But your new tummy will react to things differently. One day you'll eat something and be fine and the next time it won't sit right with you. It's part of having this surgery I think.

That happened to me too! I actually tried a new protein powder recently and it gave me the worst gas ever! I guess they're all not the same even though it had the same ingredients as my old powder.

Anyway, that happened to me with the Necture Fuzzy Navel. I stopped using it for a bit and then went back to it again and I was fine BUT my tastes changed and I ended up hating it! Weird, huh?!

Welcome to the world of WLS.  Don't expect life to be the same.  I'm 5 years out and I will still have problems with different things at different times.  I call it Refrigerator Roulette.  What agrees with you today, just may not agree with you tomorrow.  Best thing to do is put it aside and go to something else for awhile and then try that again.  Unfortunately, it's a hit and miss roller coaster.

If you want a medical explanation for it...well there isn't one that I know of.  Your digestive system has been altered permanently and will not react the way you expect it too.  Just keep trying different things.  Personally, and there is much debate on this subject, but I find soy proteins much easier on the stomach then whey protein.  My doctor had his patients all on soy protein supplements.  Now you will find those who say, stay away from soy because whey is better.  Sorry, but I disagree.  I lost 250 pounds using soy protein and all my labs except iron have always been good.  But iron has always been an issue for me, since I was a child.  Just has gotten worse in recent years.  I'm scheduled for an iron infusion within the next two weeks.  But I digress.  That is a different subject.

I got all my soy proteins online at www.ishophere.biz.  Click on the Shop by Brand button and the products are Diet Health and Sport Wise Products.  They have protein drinks, puddings, shakes, soups, hot cocoa, oatmeal and on and on.

Good luck and understand, like I said, what works today may not work tomorrow.  You just have to keep trying.

Ok I have to put my 2 cents in.  They are making you sick becuase they are gross. I have never been able to stomache them.  I thought I was going to die for the 2 weeks prior when that is all we could have and the two weeks after.  I have tried everykind in the world and they are all discusting to me.  I have tried the bars, they are gross.  I have tried starbucks kind in my coffee that was gros.  I just can't do them.  So my dear I understand your pain.  My next attempt is going to be some unflavored kind that my dear Lu swears by to put into my morning smoothie.  We shall see if that will work, if she ever brings it to me!  lol  Sorry to dish you my LULU but you know I love you!
