Well the Geek Squad said that they could send it out somewhere that would cost me between $500 and $3000. I cannot afford that.

I had my hubby call and tell them to tell Sony that I want my old hard drive back, but they said they do not know if they will send it. Lets hope!!

Thanks!

Hi Janine
My husband lost his external hard drive...same place he saves all his train pictures.  Same thing about the signal not being sent....of couse, I don't understand it but he did. Anyway,  find a data restore outfit..an independent guy (like Lon did) or some company. Geek Squard will charge you for THEM finding the outfit to save your data;  look in the yellow pages..they should be listed there. Good Luck!

It can cost a lot sometimes but you can set a limit and sometimes it's pretty simple to fix.

Geek Squad = overcharging

Your best bet would be to either google "data recovery" or go old school and Yellow Page it.  Just because your hard drive is not giving any signals, does not mean it's not working.  The crash could have knocked something loose, and a quick solder may be the fix.  Anything's possible, but a data recovery specialist may be the best thing; just don't go through Geek Squad.

Janine,  they may not be able to get a signal to get your OS (windows) running  but all may not be lost.  In these cases I have connected an IDE adaptor to removed hard drives believed to have crashed and was able to get the files off of it.  I hve done this numerous times DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT GET RID OF THIS DRIVE  take it out and save it.  I can try or you can try data recovery to save it.     I MEAN IT>>>>> ALL MAYBE NOT LOST

I do not understand why Geek Squad has screwed me like this unless they get a kick back. I am telling you when Jeff called them last night, they said they do not think Sony will send back the hardrive. Does that make sense to you?

IDE adapter $19.99  Work time about 4 hours ,  Disks to save the stuff on  $5-20   Hum I gotta wonder.  I have retrieved many drives only the save data though.  I would call whomever has it and demand it back the drive that is.   And you can take your time to recover your precious things

Sorry to hear about our dilemma, Janine. It's can be quite costly but it's very likely you could recover most if not all your hard drive data if you're prepared to put out the expenditure. There are other recovery services out there, but these guys are among the very best.

You know Rock I cannot understand why they could not recover it. I am no techie, but it seems to me that I am wondering if they get some sort of a kick back from the company they use.

I am really hoping that Sony sends me the hardrive back so I can explore other options....I just have to figure out how much those pictures and journals mean to me...a lot, but not the prices they quoted!

Thanks for input!
