Heartburn & recent surgery

Hi all,

I had my surgery just two days ago. Yipee! Unfortunately I have the same sensation that one gets from heart burn.  I get a twinge of sharp pain as liquid travels from my chest to my tummy and I feel like I need to burp, and even when I burp, it doesn't relieve that heart burn sensation. I've also been told to only eat as much as I am able or not to go past feeling full, but I can't even tell if I feel full or not with feeling like I have heartburn all the time. I felt like this before leaving the hospital and communicated that to my nurse, but she said I should just walk as much I could and didn't tell me when I should expect it to go away.

I haven't been impressed with my post-surgery support.  Any common experiences would be appreciated.

You might want to ask your surgeon about taking an OTC antacid such as Prilosec;  my surgeon had me take that for the first six weeks before having breakfast every morning.

You might not be able to experience the same sensations of fullness as pre-op;  I learned that my "high level" alarm is when my nose starts to run.  Works every time!

Some people burp, others hiccup.  Just eat a little bit and when your signal comes, you can recognize it.  It is very handy!

If you'd like to get together  with an informal wls support group in Santa Cruz, just send me a PM and I can put you in touch with a great group.  They do online support as well as meet at  other member's houses once a month. We come from everywhere, and everyone is welcome.

Good luck!

Are you eating foods? like real food? I would suggest just doing liquids for a few days and see how that goes. I know all doctors have different guidelines for post op, but I can just never understand the eating of real food right away...I was on liquids for 30 days after mine....so my new tummy could start learning about what it's new funcions were suppose to be.

Call your doctors office....if it's gas takes something like gasX

I've had a couple incidents of my band being too tight and causing band-induced GERD.  My gastro doc put me on Prevacid, which works pretty well.  But you might get by on Pepcid Complete.
