Where's The Beef

Good Afternoon All,

I know I have not been on the boards for awhile, but I have been traveling for work allot lately. I have found my caned protein shakes to be a big help, sometimes it’s hard to find things to eat.

I wanted to ask if anyone else is having problems with Beef ? or other foods. It seems every time I eat steak, ground meat, or sliced beef, ( I love Beef) I can only eat a small amount, and it takes a long time to digest. But when I eat fish, or chicken, it goes down easy, and I can eat more in a sitting, especially fish. Funny thing is a I can also eat a pretty good size portion of chilly as well, even beef. Does anyone have some words of wisdom for me, or advise as it were ? I am about 3 months post op, maybe it gets better with time ?

Like to hear from you

Beef can be hard to digest.  How do you do with pork products?  Pork can be even harder.  You may want to hold off on the beef (except for the chili) for a few months and then try it again...What we can't handle at one time...later on we can handle it.  3 of the hardest things to eat post op are pork, venison (deer), and lamb (mutton).  Beef can be right up there with them.  Brian

Brian,

Pork is not too bad, Bacon, is fine, Pork Suasage seems ok, and I can eat ham. I haven't tried chops or loin yet. Like all foods I am still restricted to small amounts. again except fish, I can seem to eat more of that then anything.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Doc . . . I don't know about the difference with RNY, but I wasn't allowed beef for a year especially steak.  I did do ground beef before that . . .but just small bits . . . don't pu**** to fast!

I wish I had the 2500 to do the walk, I would have loved to do it with you.  I am just not a good fund raiser type person.  I don't even partiicipate in the fund raisers at school.  I donate stuff and money and I let them know it up front.  I don't like asking all my friends and neighbors constantly.  So I build in donations into our budget!  lol.  But with hubby out of work for a while, no can do.  Maybe next year though.  I am doing a mud run in July and i just can't wait for that, it is going to be a blast.  So if your up for a 3 mile walk is what I am going to do and climbing over stuff and through stuff and understuff, let me know it should be very interesting. Let me know and I will send you the information.

Hi Doc! I haven't had a problem with beef except for the pre-made frozen hamburger patties. My pouch just does not like them. Other than that, the only other problem is salmon at 3-4 weeks out...my pouch just could not handle that.

My surgeon doesn't want RNY post ops to have beef until 6 months post op. I "tested the waters" at 4 months, and little problems. But beef is an issue with many post ops, either recent or 2+ years out. I find that the beef with normal fat content is easier to get down and digest than the low fat beef (like the 7%, etc.).  You might consider the buffalo burgers. I get the buffalo burgers, 4 patties in 20 oz, from Trader Joes for around $5.60. They are 43 gr of protein per patty, and one may fill you up by itself. Be careful when you cook them, as it's easy to over cook. I use a Rocket Grill, and cook one patty for 4 minutes, and it comes out medium. 3 1/2 minutes makes it a little too rare for me, red juices running off. Tastes a little different than beef, but the taste is not offensive to most that try it. More protein, less fat and calories than beef patties, easier to digest--so this may be a good alternative to beef patties. I have no issues with beef roasts, slowly cooked. Steaks, on the other hand, are still difficult to digest. DAVE
