My 30 Year Class Reunion
My 30 year high school reunion was Friday evening, July 3, 2009. The class of 1979 graduated 89 students and I graduated 3rd in my class. I went to the 10 year and the 20 year reunions but skipped the 15 and 25. I wanted to attend the 30 and I've been working for this for a while. Part of what motivated me to do weight loss surgery was the fact that I was so heavy and feeling bad about myself and the prospect of seeing a lot of these people again in the same state I was in 20 years ago was depressing. So, I made the decision to get healthy, to play, and to looooook good! I did it all!
Cindy and her husband John arrived at my house on Wednesday from Athens, Georgia. My how I have missed them! Cindy and I met when we were Freshmen and she moved to Mt Shasta. We yacked until around 10 pm and they hit the sack as they were still on Georgia time! I went to bed early as I had to get up at 4:30 to get Joe to the hospital for his surgery.
I got him checked in, and watched 'em wheel him away and then I bailed out of the hospital and went to the grocery store stocking up on provisions. Back to the hospital where I sat for a while. Noticed one young man talking to the nice pink lady. His voice started rising getting louder and louder. Yup, you guessed it. This crass ass**le was yelling at the elderly volunteer. This was SO NOT happening on my watch! I stood up and walked over there and asked him if I could help him. He told me to mind my own business. Oh, hell no. Not another infraction! Well I proceeded to tell him that anyone who chooses to abuse an elderly person or a child becomes my business and I STRONGLY urged him to step around the corner and and talk with the charge nurse who was "more adequately capable of dealing with him" than the sweet nice volunteer who gives of her own time to help those of us who has family in surgery. I then proceeded to herd him taht direction Went back to the volunteer, told her to go spash water on her face, compose herself and come back when she could as I would watch her des****il she returned. When she returned I got a "good job" from a couple of people in the waiting room and the charge nurse came around the corner and thanked me.
Got the old man through surgery (no more confrontations) and up into his room. He shoo'd me off and away we went! Quick stop at Costco for meat and wine (yeah, baby!) and we headed to Mt. Shasta. The house was beautiful and totally relaxing. Lauri and her mother showed up around 11 pm. Rhonda and her husband showed up on Friday morning around 11. Let the visiting begin! John and Gary were charged with taking pictures all weekend long. And they did such a fantastic job of it! I will post some here soon.
The reunion was fabulous! People I have not seen in such a long time were there. We visited, we hugged, we laughed and we joked around. We had a moment of silence for the 4 members of our class who had passed way before their time. We took a good class picture and then headed out to the Resort to meet up with alumni. That was more visiting. Around midinght we called it quits and headed home.
Saturday morning we were just sitting down to breakfast and my phone rang. Joe. Had a bad night due to a nurse not bringing him pain meds. He asked me to come down and help. So, off I went. Found out they had moved him because they said he had MRSA . Nothing in writing, but they "quarrantined" him anyway with another nice man who also had it. His roommie was nice, roommie's wife = bad news. More about her later. The day nurse brought me up to speed and said they were going to take back off IV pain meds and back on oral meds and if he kept pain under control they'd discharge him. They took him off IV meds the night before, then did PT on him and then didn't bring him any oral meds for 5 hours! I was not happy!
While we were trying to just doze the roommie's wife came in and wow...........what an experience! She was LOUD! beyond loud. TWEEKER loud. Of course, she had a crisis. She had no license, no insurance yet she took hubbie's truck and wrecked it. She was calling Geico, trying to get a rental car, get it delivered, all the while Joe is trying to sleep. She was in and out. Everytime she came in from outside she reeked of cigarette smoke, said how hot it was and cranked the AC down to 60. I'd then silently adjust it back up to 70 as both Joe and I were freezing. 3 times this happened. And, she also bumped his bedside table so that it hit him in the head twice. The next time she left to go outside, I followed here. I asked to speak with her for a minute.
I asked her if she realized that this was not all about her. That this was all about those two men in there trying to recover from major surgery. That they didn't need to be exposed to her crisis, her tears, her frustration, and her loud attempts to call Geico, and friends who wouldn't give her numbers. I reminded her that it was NOT about her and I told her that I no longer wanted her to conduct her business in the hospital room, that as long as I or my husband was in the room, she was to not speak above a whisper I told her he had had a bad night and needed rest and that her bumping the table into his head, speaking loud, adjusting the AC and all that was detrimental to his healing and I would not put up with it I looked her point blank in the eyes and told her to NOT bring that crap back into my husband's hospital room and if she did, I would F*CK her up. Point blank and straight to the point. Joe's nurse was standing behind this cow and pumped her fist with a great big "YES!"
Ok, I got Joe home, all set up and headed back up the hill. They had dinner ready for me and then we headed out to tthe Resort to watch fireworks. Again, an awsome show.
Sunday was relaxing. We downloaded pictures, printed some out, framed them, and made CD's for everybody. Rhonda left around 11 as they had a 5 hour drive home. Cindy and John left around 7 pm and headed to Sac to catch a morning plane. Lauri and I stayed to close up the house on Monday.
It was a weekend of sitting on the back deck drinking wine, looking at the koi pond, walking the property, visiting good friends, making plans and totally reconnecdting. Patty came over on Sunday and spent the day with us after all her company left.
All in all, it was one totally amazing weekend. Good friends are so hard to come by and spending time with them is precious. Rhonda is the first person I met when I moved to Mt. Shasta in the 6th grade. My first day ever in a public school having come from St. Johns, Irish nuns and uniforms. Talk about a duck out of water! Lauri came up to me and told me I looked like I needed a friend. These two women have been my friends through thick and thin.
Ah, so there is the story of my amazing 30 year class reunion! We are so not going to wait another 5, 10, and yes........sadly 20 years between visits. Rhonda and I had not seen each other in 20 years as our lives took us in different directions. My ex was her ex boyfriend and he wasn't "comfortable" maintaining a relationship with her. Whatever. I was an idiot to have ever listened to him. We are all planning a trip to Georgia next year for a NASCAR race! WhooooHoooo! And Joe's going too! I can hardly wait.
Pictures (or at least a link to them) here soon!

Hey MoMo,
So glad you had a great time with the reunion. Sorry to hear Joe had such a bad experience in the hospital but so glad he has a good partner to set those folks straight. Huh, reminds me of someone else I know.... me! I'm once yelled at a Dr. because he had treated a nurse so disrespectfully. I used to work for a Dr. and learned they are just people, some have more class than others, he had none and I told him so. I got a atta girl from the nurses who said he was always that way. I told them, he won't do it while I'm there!
Can't wait to see you and Ms. Energizer Bunny in the next couple of weeks.
Hugs my friend,
Barb
