Nuts...

I posted this on the Main Board a few weeks ago.  Thought we could get a thread going about nuts.  Also the guy mentioned that if you are eating more nuts you need to cut down on your use of oils...salad dressings and such.

Went to the local support group this evening...We had the hospital nutritionist as the guest speaker.  We had talked before, going through my surgery.  I e-mailed him yesterday and asked him about nuts...how much we should have and which nuts to avoid.  He spoke this evening on the subject.  Thought I would share a couple of the highlights (we know most of these things already).
He said try and limit the amount of nuts you consume throughout the day.  Nuts have great nutritional value but are high in oils and fats.  He recommended almonds and walnuts the most.  He said to try and avoid any nuts that have more than 2 grams of saturated fats per oz.  Below is the list of nuts he gave me...I'll add the fat and saturated fat tables to it.  Brian

Nut                   Fat                   Saturated Fat
Pistachios           13                    1.5
Almonds             15                    1
Cashews             13                    3
Macadamias       22                    3.5
Peanuts              14                    2
Pecans               21                    2
Walnuts             19                    1.5
Pumpkin             21                    2
Brazil nuts         18                    4
Pine Nuts           19                    1.5
Sunflower Seed 14                    1.5

I'm all about texture when it comes to food,I love things that crunch!

I keep a bag of roasted almonds in my drawer at work and when I get the munchies I measure out a complete serving. 25 alomonds, no more....no less.

Even though they are high in fat content, they leave my pouch really full and I get the crunchy craving out of my system.

Thank you for sharing, Brian!

I am still pre-op, hopefully not for long. But this is good information to know. I really appreciate that you thought of us and shared.

Have a great evening.

In friendship,

Michelle T.

Yeh Monica, there are some nuts on the Cali Board.  Speaking of crunch...The only thing that will satisfy my craving...usually late at night...tortilla chips...My downfall (the salt, the oil, the crunch).

I love nuts of all sorts they just tear my intestines up big time....I can do the spreads, smooth ones but no crunchy ones.....

Thanks for the info....I too need to chomp on things....If I have my mixed nuts, I ensure I limit other fatty foods and minimize it.  Plus, I'll drink that extra water to have it not absorb as much?

Greetings and thanks for posting this thread Brian.

I am happy to see that my Sunflower Seeds are some of the "good nuts".  I buy the reduced sodium seeds and these satisfy my need for salt, crunch and keep my hands and mouth busy for quite a while!  LOL

Thanks again,
Barb

Wow, I never thought about all the other issues with nuts.  I was sure all would be good.  Thank you for posting that, it's important to look at the nutrional ingredients on the back of everything I guess.  I too am very glad that sunflower seeds are good for you.  I eat them for my crunch!

thanks again, keep this little tidbits of info coming, it's a great assets to so many, me included.
