I got my lab results today and was able to compare this year to last year and the year before.

The most important (to me):

Cholesterol: 246 to 229
HDL: 83 to 87
LDL: 142 to 124
LDL/HDL Ratio: 1.7 to 1.4

The most important to us:

Iron: 109 to 123
Iron Binding: 350 to 397 (not sure how that works so high!)
Saturation stayed at 31
Unsaturated: 241 to 274

Calcium: 9.5 to 9.3
Folate: 23.19 to 26.54 (too high)
B-12 736 to 613...I'll be increasing my B-12, this next year
Vitamin D: 48.6 to 47 (up from the first year at 39.9)
Intact PTH: 21 to 43..

All the others, I'm still working on what they are and what they mean but they've stayed pretty much the same. Comments?
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Before Surgery: 214
Highest Weight: 240
Now: 125.6
Goal: 130

This is NOT medical advice, these are my targets for the main blood levels I watch

Protein: 7's

Albumin: 4's

Pre-Albumin: 20-30's

Iron: 80-100

Ferritin: 200-300

HGB: 12+

HCT: 36+

Vit A: 60- 80

Vit D: 80-120

Calcium: 9.0-9.4

PTH: 20-40

Vit B1: Mid to top of range

Vit B6: Mid to top of range

Magnesium: Mid range (but also go by if we have leg/foot cramping)

Zinc: Mid range

Vit B12: 1000 +

Folate: Top of range

AST (sgot): Below 40

ALT (sgpt): Below 40

We usually want to "meet or beat" pre-op levels. In some cases, higher is better, and in other cases (Cholesterol, PTH for example), lower is better.

The only things *I* don't mind being on the high end of out of range are Ferritin and B12. But that applies to ME.

Lots to think about. Thank you! Magtnsium is actually high but I do have occasional leg cramps...wondering if I should make a mention of zinc to my PCP..Hmm.

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

In reviewing more, I have high levels of vitamin A, nearly twice what it should be. Folate is more than 10 points too high at 26.54.

Iron is on the high side..higher than it was last year. PTH is too high. Not sure what that means. Any suggestions?

Hi Darlene,

I'm wondering who gave you those numbers for iron.  My hemotologist  has given me some other numbers and I'm wondering what the deal is.

Ferritin they are telling me should be 100 where mine is a whopping 2.5 and believe it or not that is up from my low of 1.0 on March 24th.

HGB should be 15-16 mine is finally up to 10.6 from my low of 7.8 on March 24

HCT should be 30, mine is now up to 14

I'm not sure what you mean by that iron number you have listed at 80 - 100.  Obviously, for me my iron, which has been a problem all my life, has reached some critical levels due to obviously no oral absorption.  At least I'm getting it all taken care of finally.  But it's been one long hard road to say the least.

I'm going to ask my hemotologist next time I see him what he thinks.  Maybe WLS people have to try for higher numbers on some things.  Of course in my case, being as I have little to no iron absorption and have dealt with anemia my entire life, way before WLS, I suppose my numbers could differ as I will be getting my iron intravenously forever.

I'll let you know what he says although it will be awhile.  I'm not scheduled to see him until December as long as my readings keep going up after each infusion.

yes, we have to keep our number different than people that have not had WLS......cause we are special....:)
