What would you do?

OK once again I watched the TV show “What would you do?" This program was about Discrimination. It took place in a sandwich shop, kind of like Subway. The worker was refusing to sever someone just because they where. He was very rude to the two guys, that where made up to look like day labors. Both acted as if they did not speak English very well. I was SHOCKED to see that out of the 10 people filmed only one spoke up to help the two guys, the other 9 either agreed with the worker or said/done nothing.   Now this one was easy for me to pick a side, I would speak up, and have done so in the pass. I don’t agree with any type of discrimination for any reason against anyone. It is just wrong!! There is no way you can make it right.   After the show they interviewed a couple of the men and women that where agreeing with the worker. Once they found out that it was show, they changed the story, but it was to late. The damage was done, they looked like fools trying to clean up there mess. One guy flat refused to talk to anyone with the show, and refused to sign consent to be on the show, so they blurred his face. But that just made him look even more foolish. His reason was he lost his job as a insurance sales man. OHHHH coming, a day labor is going to take that job???? Get real!!! Another lost his job as a mechanic and WAS replaced by an Hispanic….the owners brother who lost his job, But the owners family was born here as was his parents and their parents.   It was very good show last night and had me rip roaring mad at some of the foolishness.   So what would you do? Would you say any thing? Or just keep quiet? Or do as one lady done, would you turn around and walk out? She told the camera man that she would not stay or spend her money in any placed that behaved in such a way. But do to what happened once before, she would not get involved. She did not going into detail with the camera as to what happened.   Take a moment, think about and let us know “ What would YOU do"???   Lu

Hey Miss Lu.

Good morning.  I would have said something... and I have.

As my husband kidingly says (we call them Ronisms in our house) I can't stand intolerance.  Think about it!  Those of you who have met Ron may have experienced his Ronisms, they are a hoot.

No, joking aside, I think the one that stands out as most impressive was when I chewed out the Dr who was publicly disrespectful to a nurse who was doing her job.  I asked him who did he think he was, and told him she was doing her job with care and compassion and that if he listened instead of reacting, he might learn something!  He was taken back and the rest of the nurses came up and thanked me because he was always this way.

I have told employees many times that their behavior was going to get them fired if I saw or heard that from them again.... I'm in HR, it's my job!

I like that show What Would You Do, but darn it I missed it last night.  Ron was watching NCIS reruns and I was talking on the phone (what else is new!)  LOL

Hugs,
Barb

Well, not seeing the entire show and the entire situation, it's hard to give a solid answer.  My first reaction is, of course I would speak up and say something.  But what if the customer's were being rude or disorderly?  If that were the case, I would have said something to them about having manners.  However if all they did was walk up to the counter and want to order a sandwich and were polite but having problems with communication because of language barriars, then there is no excuse for them being refused service and no excuse for the counter person to be rude and have no manners.  That would just be wrong.

We live in very tough economic times right now.  It's human nature to want to blame someone for your troubles and the easy targets are the undocumented foreigners in the country.  Not to get on my political soapbox, but it costs the average working American citizen a great deal of money to care for those in this country illegally.  Couple that with the fact that so many Americans are out of work and can't find jobs and they see illegals as coming here and either taking their jobs or their tax dollars to survive and it just increases the anger quotient in people.

I'm second generation American.  All of my grandparents were born in Europe and came here for better lives.  But they came legally.  The learned the language.  They got their citizenship and became law abiding, tax paying Americans and always referred to America as their country.  They never referred to Russia, or Ukraine or Austria as their country.  Those were the places they were born and raised. Their adopted home was now their country. They talked fondly of their places of birth and where they spent their early lives,  but they were so proud to now be Americans.

I think alot of Americans who see illegals speak badly of the US and say that the bad that goes on here would never happen in "their country", get angry and the anger spills onto all foreigners.  If  "their country" was so great, then go back to it and leave this place that is so bad.  It's a volatile situation.

Anyway, now that I've probably offended a whole lot of people, the beauty of living in America is that we can all have our own opinions and voice them without fear of repercusions.  Of course that is until we go to that sandwich shop and try to get a sandwich.

15 DAYS, Lu....15 DAYS!!!!!!!

Good topic Lu..thank you.

I shy away from confrontation when it is outside the family; it just isn't in my nature to cause a scene.  BUT, I have and would step in to help the ones having difficulty communicating their wants or needs.  In fact, Lon and I were in the grocery store just the other day and an oriental gentlman was having trouble telling the store employee what he was looking for...we figured it out and took him over to the isle he needed.  The store employee was trying, but he was a young kid and obviously didn't have a clue how to communicate with the gentleman...maybe our schools should be teaching communciation skills again???

No doubt, I would speak up...don't know about anyone else but I went to school for 12 years to learn English and don't expect others to learn it over night.  Americans expect other countries to speak English yet we refuse to learn ourselves.   Speak up people. We are called the melting pot for a reason.

Lu, I have a big mouth and to me there is Nothing uglier than discrimination!!  and oh yeah!! I would say something in  a heart beat!!! Ask anyone that has met me my veiws of discrimination and they can tell you, Joy don't play that way!! There is NO excuse for begotry, decrimination, or racism.sexism...We have enough problems in this country without that crap. My people hav e been native Cailfornias for 8 generations. I don't have a problem with men and women come across the border doing work that I don't know of any "California man or woman"  english speaking or not doing the work they are doing they are adding to our economy by paying taxes and into Social Security. I am 67th generation Californian, my children are 8 and there, the grand kids makes 9. We have 5 geneations in this state and 5 generation alive in this coounty right now!! My family move to this area in 1843 to settle in this State. And never looked back this was home,,, Personal It doesn;t worry me how anyone got here so long as they pull there weight once the are here!!!!!! How many white Clai boys do you see out workingt tomatoes during hearvest!! If any I guess you could count then on one had!! People aren't having there jobs taken away for reasons of decrimination they are beck in many ( not all) cases they are lazy and don't want to work!!
