Hi Cali Friends:  There is a "Nutrition guides for weight loss" class on Wednesday the 12th.  I believe it is in Fountain Valley @ 6:30pm.  Is anyone planning on attending?  I want to go and thought I would check to see if anyone is going or interested.  Maybe we could carpool.

Let me know if you are going or want to car pool.  Send me a PM with your phone and we can hook up.

Can you provide more details such as if there are any restrictions related to attendees, cost and etc.  It sounds like ti would be worth going to and seeing what they have to say.
Thanks

The classes are held at Fountain Valley Hospital (2nd Wed. of each month).  They are done by a NUT.  They are free and I see nothing on my paperwork that states you have to be going to a certain doctor.  Probably should call to see if registration is necessary.  That number is 714-378-7622.  The class instructor is:  Mary Seiersen, R.D., C.D.E.  She is the NUT I had for my NUT class.  Here is a list of upcoming classes:

Aug. 12 - Nutrition Guides for Weight Loss Plateaus:
What is the right amount of carbs, proteins, & calories.  Portion control, exercise

Sept. 9 -  Changing Your Eating Behavior:
Coping skills, stress management & self reward.  Goal setting, emotional eating &
                 other food triggers.

Oct. 14 -  Restaurant Dining / Your Restaurant Rights:
                  Healthy restaurants to choose

Nov. 11 -  Healthy Cooking:
Healthy cooking tips, recipe modification.  Bring your own recipe to modify, share your
                  low calorie recipes.

Dec. 9 -    Label Reading / Field Trip - Albertsons 18579 Brookhurst (meet at 6:20 pm in front)
A "hands on" experience in how to understand food labels and shop for healthier
                 meals.

I missed the July 8th class which was Healthy meal & snack ideas (high protein foods, grab and go easy meals".

The classes for this year were done twice.  She does the first six mos. and then starts again.  Not sure if she will have the same topics again next year, but we can find this out at the class.

I very much want to go to the classes.  Just thought I would see if anyone wanted to carpool with me.  I work in Norwalk, live in Lakewood.  I would be home about 4:30 from work and plan to leave around 5 ish to make the class as traffice on the 405 is heavy this time of day.

I live at South & Lakewood so maybe you could come to my house to carpool as I am close to the 91 & 605 fws.

Hey Jackie,

That would be great.  I am going to call on Monday as well and register to attend also.  The classes are not required by my doctor, just something that was put into my binder as additional classes if we wanted.  I think they are a great idea.

I have only attended 2 support groups at LB Memorial Hospital (boring).  First one was a requirement before surgery and the 2nd one I also did before surgery.  LB support group is mostly lap band patients and no one really has much to say.  Usually just the Psych talking.  I may start going to the classes in Fountain Valley.  I understand there are many people and most are RNY.  Always able to carpool if you are interested.

Jackie & Annette,

I am so surprised to hear neither of you were required to take classes before you surgery!! I had to take several both with my surgeon and with the hospital I had the operation at.  I don't know how I would be doing without those NUT classes.  I really want to encourage you to attend what looks like a great set of classes.  I felt support and just felt more confident about what I was doing by having these classes.

Jackie, I hope they are open classes so you can go!!  Good for both of you for wanting to go.

Hi MsBlues...
I definitely want to go to these. :)   My surgeons office has a Lifestyle management program for 6 months after the surgery every tuesday night that is mandatory for us to pay for and go too.  As well as support groups on the 2nd and 4th thurs of each month.  So Im looking foward to going to both sets :)  I just didnt get any classes before.  I did however read as much as I could.  However, at this point Im ready for more research, especially about nutrition for after surgery. :)

Thanks!

Hugs,

Jackie

Well I did have to attend a couple of things before surgery.  Here is what was required of me:

1.  Orientation Class
2.  One support group
3.  One nutrition class (general)
4.  Appt. w/psych.
5.  One on one with Surgeon
6.  Post op instruction w/obesity center.

The classes I listed earlier are entirely up to us and are free.  I feel that because they are specific rather than general they should be very helpful.

Support Group Classes in my area are at LB Memorial and they meet once a month on Tuesdays and also free.  I have been to 2 of these classes and most are band patients and it is the same stuff over and over.

I have not attended the classes in Fountain Valley  and believe they meet 2 times a month where most people are RNY patients.  I hear it is a wonderful class with many members and support people.  These are also free.  I may decide to go to one some day but the drive is about 1 - 1.5 hrs at that time of day.  I feel the Nutrition classes for now would be awsome, I get lots of support if I have questions here on OH and of course at the LB Coffee at the end of the month.

So you see, I did have to go to some classes.  Just thought I would pass this along as I really think most surgeons would require at least the minimum of what I did.

What I did not have to do was the 2 week pre-op liquid diet.  That was entirely up to me and I chose not to do this.

By the way, I totally understand your earlier post about being anonymous.  No explaination needed for me.
