Caffiene Questions

Hi all,

I am confused. I was told by the surgeon to avoid caffiene, but I see many of you mention indulging in a cup of coffee. I am around 12 weeks out from my RNY.  Is the no caffiene rule a forever rule or just an "at first" rule?

I really miss my morning jolt somedays, and today is one of those days.

Thanks!

Hi there,

At 12 weeks out I would hold off for a while.  I didn't have caffeine for probably 2 years after surgery and then I started coffee which is pretty funny because I never drank coffee before surgery.  Hated the taste, but that changed.

Basically there is no nutritional value in caffeine.  We all know that.  It is also said to stimulate hunger.  I don't know about that.  But look at it this way.  Your little pouch is like a 12 week old baby.  Would you give coffee to a 3 month old?  I didn't think so.   You will eventually be able to have your cup of coffee again.  Just not right now.  Be patient.  All good things come to those who wait.  Or some such crap.  LOL

Ms. Blues,

I asked my surgeon about coffee at my 3 month post op appt and was told that caffiene was ok as long as it was not over done.  So, about 4 months post op, I started drinking it again but was slow on drinking it and made sure that everything agreed with my pouch.  Generally I have 2 cups in the morning and drin****d tea in the afternoon.  I do not notice an increase in hunger and I sleep just fine.  I don't do espresso anymore though, only coffee and tea.

I told my surgeon, hey I don't drink alcohol or smoke or do drugs, I gotta have some fun!  LOL

I would go slow though and make sure your surgeon feels it's safe to do so.

Hugs,
Barb

I kept away from the stuff until I was a year out (more or less...11 months if you wanna be technical) and the surgeon told me that I was done losing weight. He did tell me that my pre-op upper endoscopy showed a hiatal hernia but I don't believe that was from caffeine. It was from stuffing my gullet till it could fit no more...

Now I watch for any signs of acidy feelings after consuming caffeine...
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Hi there
Going to go out on the perverbial 'plank' here and state the opposite of what others have posted so far. ;-)  Before surgery, the case worker, the nutritionist and my surgeon all said caffeine would be a no no, before and forever after.  It took me 3 weeks to ween myself off the stuff but the idea of causing myself an ulcer or somehow damaging the pouch was not worth the stress of worrying about it all the time.  I'm now 5 mos out and I have switched to decaf (Folgers in the green can) both coffee and tea.   I honestly can say, with Folgers anyway, I can't tell the difference; but I don't use the instant stuff...it's the grounds that need to be brewed.  My philosphy is if the doc says don't, I don't; if the doc say ok, than I can consider it. ^_^

Thanks for all the information! I was confused.  I know that too much caffiene bothered my digestive system before my RNY so I probably don't want to pu**** What this means is I have to go to bed at a decent hour and not rely on caffiene to keep me awake on my drive and boring meetings. I do miss that energy blast in the morning!!

I enjoy my coffee and tea, that is just about the only stuff I drink, but they are BOTH decaf. The only time its not, is when I am out and about and order some tea. The never have decaf, so I just get what they have. My doctor told me that caffeine is a dehydrator, and I should avoid it the best I can. So I do.

But truth told, it does not matter what any of us say, the only person that should count is YOUR DOCTOR! Follow their plan. Ask them this question and see what they say, and go from there.

Best of luck
