I had gastric bypass on Aug 3. Three weeks ago. I still have itching but NOT on the surgical site. ALL over my tummy. Ive scrached so much I have left marks. I wake up itchy and find that I scratch in my sleep. Its driving me nuts.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? Anyone else experience this sorta thing? Im hoping someone is awake to respond. (and since im new, a moderator to approve this in the first place)

I don't remember myself itching from RNY, but I can tell you this, I had back surgery 2 weeks ago, and I am going NUTS across my back, it's a good sign is what the doc said last week.  Have you tried putting something on the area that is itching to see if that helps.  I put neusporin (sp) and that helped some, but I am going to have to get some itching cream.  If it continues, I would be calling the doctor or his office at least.

Good luck, Diane

I'm 8 weeks out and unfortunately I itch everywhere!  First I thought I was allergic to one of the many supplements we need to take but that wasn't it....  I finally had to make an appt with the dermatologist cause I could not take the itching anymore!  The dermatologist told me that it is because my body is going through so many changes and my skin was really dehydrated and no amount of drinking water was going to help.  She prescribed me a medicated anti itch cream and recommended that i shower only in colder water (absolutely no steaming hot) and make sure to apply lotion liberally often throughout the day.

Before I went to the dermatologist I used calamine lotion and cortizone 10 ... those did help some but not enough, so try those as well.  Hope this helps!
Excited for the new me!

RNY on 05/26/09 with
in addition to the calamine and cortizone you'll need to use a really good hydrating cream.

and yeah hot showers will only dry out the skin even more.

i itched after surgery as well.  and it was all due to dehydration.  it dries out your skin.

my cure was neutrogena body oil.  I have it in my shower and rub down my entire body after I'm done showering.  then pat dry with a towel so that im not rubbing it all off or letting it all soak into the towel.  thats the one thing that helped me the most for the dry skin.  now i dont itch anymore but im also getting in the 64oz of water now too.

Thank you so much for all of your replies. There is a complication. The tube that opens into my pouch is swelled shut with scar tissue. Ive spent four days fighting to get even 20 ounces of water down. It mostly doesnt go down and it ends up coming back up. I have an endoscopy scheduled tomorrow morning. I went to both my regular doctor and my surgeons office and they both say that I am not dehydrated as of yet. The dehydration makes a lot of sense. I didnt think about the hot steamy water drying out my skin. I will get some hydrating oil and the regular doc did give me a cream for the itching as well.
