Really Scared
Hi, all. my name is Amy. I am scheduled for surgery on September 29. I am having the Lap RNY. I was so anxious to go through the process. I was very quick to get my psych eval, nut, seminars, and support groups out of the way. I was submitted to insurance and approved fairly quick(within 3 days). Now that it is all said and done, reality is starting to set in. I find myself completely lost in the thought of surgery and having panic attacks on a regular basis. I don't feel like this is something I have jumped into. I have been researching the option for well over 3 years. I have read every book, studied the diets, made supplement charts. I know what to expect so, why am I now suddenly so freaked out? Help?!
Relax; this is totally normal. You don't say whether you've ever had surgery before, but believe me when I say that the team of professionals that will be working on you will do their absolute best to take very good care of you.
This is just the jitters; kind of like all the birthdays and christmases you've ever waited for all rolled up in one day.
Hang in there. I spent HOURS on the Before and After photos from this website. That is a great way to get through the days.
Good luck!

Amy,
I was nervously excited before surgery too, so very normal! I don't regret my decision for even a second! No diabetes meds, high blood pressure meds or cholesterol meds. My asthma is the best it's been in 30 years and my blood sugars are staying below 100 on their own. I can walk 3 miles like it's down the driveway and I am anxious to begin running.
This is a wonderful healthy lifestyle and you're gonna love it.
Hang in there, as Lynn said look at the before and afters and read blogs!
Hugs,
Barb

Thank you both so much for your encouragement. It feels so good to know that I am not freaking out for nothing and, it is normal. I did have my gallbladder removed in 2001 but, it was not something that I knew was coming. I went in by ambulance with what I thought at the time was a heart attack! That night they had me in the OR, my gallbladder was so grossly infected. I ended up staying for 11 days because I couldn't shake the fever that came with the infection. I suppose if I can go through that, I will be just fine through this. It's the anticipation thats killing me! Haha
Hi Amy...
I too read all I could, talked to peeps, went to groups, read this board, continuously looked at before and afters.. dreaming that it would be me someday. And I was completely confident that this was the right choice. I started my pre op diet July 2nd, 2009 had surgery on july 16th and Ive lost 63.2 lbs so far. Ive had ups and downs with eating and exercise but i feel so much better and I know it was right and im looking forward to the rest of my life now.
Its so amazing the difference already in just breathing and walking!! This group is awesome and they can be the best support you will ever get! You will do great! There is always a nervousness about surgery, but if you know this is what you want and you go into it positively.. it will be great!
Hugs!!

Gosh, you are just being normal. It's ok, and the surgery will be like your gallbladder surgery. But less the infection and 11 days in the hospital. Keep looking past the surgery day, think about a year from now, all the WOW moments you will have, all the new clothes, a new healthier you and so many other things, I can't tell you. You will be ok, take a deep breath and you are going to be fine.
I have never looked back and said, crap, what did I do. I was happy that I had it, and sad I didn't do it sooner. My recovery from RNY was swift, and I will pray it will be for you too.
Welcome to the boards, we are here to help you with anything you need.

I have my surgery on Monday and I am doing the same thing. Sometimes I feel like I am just going to cry then I have to keep telling myself why I am doing this. Just think about your future and push the scaries out of your mind. It is totally normal to be scared before surgery no matter what kind it is or how many you've had so don't feel bad and try not to stress out. Good luck and congratulations on the Beginning of your new and improved life
Thank you all so much. I have decided that I will just try to keep my mind occupied so it can't wander on me. I have made a list of the things I will be taking with me to the hospital. A list of questions to ask my surgeon(if you all have any questions, let me know and I will ask them too!), and a list of things I still need after surgery. You are all absolutely right. This is something I have worked hard to get to, I'm not going to let fear get in the way now. Half the battle won, but not the war!
Yes, those photos are awesome. This is my third time around prepping for surgery - I've been cancelled twice for not getting close enough to my pre-op goal weight. It's been such a long and at times discouraging road for me. I just joined this site, and the photos were the hook. I am so encouraged reading everyone's stories, and seeing their before & afters!
Good luck on your surgery!!
