Hi everyone!  I am six weeks out from my RNY and doing well physically.  I am a wee bit discouraged with my weight loss but trying to stay positive.  To that end, I am asking for help.  I am looking for anyone who would like to share recipes, tips on getting proper nutrition, sufficient protein and adequate exercise.
Also, I am a type one diabetic and know that this condition is affecting the speed of my weight loss.  If anyone is/ knows a diabetic educator or nutritionist who understands the needs of the WLS/diabetes super combo, let me know.
Feel free to PM me -- I am anxious to meet new people on this journey!

Good morning!

While I don't live in So Cal, I wanted to congratuate you on your surgery and welcome you to the Cali boards.  My best advice is to tell you to follow the advice and protocol of your surgeon and nutritionist as each program, surgeon and person is completely different with regard to nurtition, proteins etc.

There are many good websites and cookbooks out there for WLS patients, including Eggface, who is herself a RNY success who has a website.  Just google weightloss surgery receipes and you'll find a gazillion!  Also, there is a receipe forum on OH.

Don't know where you live in SoCal but you will find the nicest folks down there who get together monthly, so by all means, go, you won't regret it.

Again welcome,
Barb

Thank you for your support, Barb.  I am feeling a little overwhelmed as I am the first in my family to have the surgery.  The people I know seem to have been the "super" success stories, with 100 lb losses in six months.  I am really needing some 'slow and steady' compatriots to help keep me focused and motivated -- wherever they may live :)

I am definitely going to look into the recipe sites.  I am having a lot of trouble keeping food down right now, even my beloved Laughing Cow Light wedge that was a sure thing there for a while.  My program does not seem to offer a nutritionist.  Or, maybe I haven't asked the right person in the right way.  I will check into it again.

Thanks again and congratulations on your amazing accomplishment.

Hi and congrats on your weight loss surgery (WLS) journey.  Always follow the protocol of your surgeon's office relative to your wls and what to eat and drink, and don't get discouraged as everyone is unique and different in their weight loss.  The California Board is a great place to post because there are so many people with various knowledge and experience that will respond to your post.

I am sending you some general information that may or may not help.

Physiological hunger or real hunger starts to occur about two to four hours after your last meal. Symptoms include an empty or rumbling feeling in your stomach.  If you ignore this signal you body then sends you a stronger signal in the form of a headache, dizziness or lightheadedness. This type of hunger is your body's way of telling you it is time to nourish your body. So go

eat some protein.

Psychological hunger or head hunger occurs at any time and has no physical symptoms.  Obsessing about food, emotional situations, certain personal triggers, or food cravings may cause you to think that you are hungry when you're really no****ching TV and wanting to eat is head hunger. Grazing is head hunger.

To assist you to identify which type of hunger you're feeling and what action you should take with that feeling, look at our Hunger-Satiety Rating Chart.

Hunger vs. Satiety Chart

1...………………….Stuffed to the point of feeling sick

2…Very uncomfortable, you need to loosen your belt

3….………….……Uncomfortable full, you are stuffed

4…….……Very full, you feel like you have overeaten

5…………………...Comfortably full, you are satisfied

6……………………Contented, neither full nor hungry

7………………………….Beginning signals of hunger

8……………………………………Hungry need to eat

9…………………Very hungry, unable to concentrate

10………………………………Starving, dizzy, irritable

Where are you right now on this chart? At number five you have satiety, if you are above this

number on the chart you have over eaten. If you are at six, you are neutral, nether hungry or full.

If you are at a seven, then you are beginning to get hungry and need to consider eating soon. If

you let your hunger go for a while you will start to feel the physical signs of hunger.

Where do your habits fit into this chart? If you are waiting to eat until you are "starving", irritable, or unable to concentrate; you will eat to fast and then you will likely eat beyond a comfortable feeling of fullness just to get rid of those bad physical feelings. Start paying close attention; start eating when you have early signals of hunger (level 7) and stop eating when you are comfortably full (level 5).

Keep a written record of your feelings of hunger, using this chart. This will help you to recognize if you are waiting too long to eat, or eating beyond a comfortable, satisfied level. Record what and how much you are eating - when you are too hungry versus the times you are just beginning to feel hunger.

This exercise will assist you to adjust your eating schedule to accommodate your true need for food.

It sure is good C'ING LESS OF ME!

We could learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp, some are pretty,
some are dull, some have weird names,
& all are different colors....but they

ALL exist very nicely in the same box.

My biggest food issue right now is not being able to keep things down.  I am doing a lot of liquids including H2O, Isopure RTD, and protein shakes.  For the first time in my life, I have no appetite and zero desire to eat.  I am worried about my nutritionional intake and think it is affecting my energy level which is, in turn, making exercise harder.  Boo hiss!  I believe in my heart things will come around but my mind is less willing to listen :)

Hi There,

Welcome to the Cali Boards.  I had my surgery on 7/14 with Dr. Ali as well.  You are in good hands.  As for the hunger, you will not feel hungry or even have an appetite for a while.  Until recently I ate only because I needed to eat.  Now that I am eating regular food again, I have not changed anything with the exception of very little or no pasta, rice.  For now though you should be concentrating on stage 2 foods I believe.  I ate a whole bunch of puddings, instant mashed potatoes, creamed chicken soup (strained), and drank lots of Isopure.

Like Barb stated earlier, use the OH boards to help you gain the support you so desire.  As for the nutritionist, look in your binder given to you and you should have a number in there, or call Dr. Ali's office and ask for the nutritionist name and number.  You will need to leave a message for her/him and they do call back promptly.  Eggface has great recipes as well.

Also, be sure to come to the So Cal Coffee Group held the last Saturday of every month in Seal Beach.  It is formerly known as the LB Coffee.  We are a large group with much love and support for one another.  Everyone is very positive, we do a clothing exchange as well, and several people even go to lunch together after.

Feel free to PM if you wish.

Good luck on this awsome journey, you will find that things WILL BE different for everyone as they should be.

AGAIN WELCOME TO THE CALI BOARDS

Annette
