Feels like I'm on a see-saw
First off, let me say that I could definitely have worse problems to deal with, but I'm just getting frustrated and would like OFF the see-saw...lol. I had my RNY on 9/14 and I am entering my third week out, I haven't had any problems so far as far as getting sick and I thank my lucky stars for that, and I absolutely LOVE that I am losing the weight. However; is it normal (yeh, I know there is no such thing as normal) to hit a sort of plateau this quickly? See, I hit that first 20 pound goal, which was amazing! Then I weighed in a couple days later and I gained two pounds? Then I lost the two pounds....now it's back again.
I'm getting in my protein, drinking my water, taking all my vitamins and doing the walking every day. I know that this is just a temporary problem, but the issue is that I am such a perfectionist that when I see those two pounds gone...they need to stay gone...LOL. I'll keep on, keepin' on and hopefully those nasty two pounds will go away forever and quit tryin to creep back on.
Anyone else have something similar happen to them about this time?
Thanks!
Dee
Yes you are normal! Now aren't you glad you asked :-)
I did the same thing, I'd lose 2 lbs per week, then nothing then wow, 6lbs in a week. No worries, just keep doing and following all that the Doc says and you're going to be a success!
Don't get frustrated, just be glad and hang in there!
Hugs and friendship,
Barb
Your body is just going through a lot of changes and is going to do what it wants to do so be patient. As long as you are following your surgeon's wls protocol than you are on an amazing wls journey.

It sure is good C'ING LESS OF ME!
We could learn a lot from crayons:
some are sharp, some are pretty,
some are dull, some have weird names,
& all are different colors....but they
ALL exist very nicely in the same box.

Still staying on-track calorie-wise? And the scale shows you stopping? Or Even Gaining?!?!? ----------------------------Re-Post Unsolicited advice/info… -------------------------------------- Pull back from your ‘daily’ charting, and look at a weekly or even monthly. There are up and down spikes each day, But if you ‘graph’ the highest to the lowest, I’d bet there is still A downward slope over the course of the month. There’s an 8 to 10lb. volume of "wiggle room" due to water alone. And it comes into play a lot. This has to do with our bodies using glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, But it is stored in our muscles for quick energy – One pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, And the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, (Like when you drop down to your calorie intake) Your body turns first to stored glycogen, Which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, You also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it Voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of any diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, Your body starts to ‘realize’ that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue And burning fat for energy. But your body also ‘realizes’---- (by way of your liver releasing hormones signaling low Cal intake) ---That fat can't be used for short bursts of energy – Like, to outrun a saber-tooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, And rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, (Thus showing negative Calorie load overall) Your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while As you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. Yes? The whole ‘weight-loss’ process is not a straight "Slide" down the scale. More like "Stair-Steps," (Down then forward, then down, then forward, etc... As your body cycles fat out of "deep storage" and through the Liver Into the muscles as Glycogen. The muscles and Liver can hold about a 3 weeks supply. This is why many people find that their "Stall" or "Plateau" Breaks when adding a bit of exercise And upping their water intake, or in the case of an "extreme exerciser," The total Calorie or Protein Intake, To signal the liver to let go of more Glycogen. Fear not, many people who are now enjoying life at a normal BMI Once had a few weeks or so of thinking- "...my weight loss has been awfully slow, has it stopped..."? Hope this helps some. You are doing Great! Keep it Up! Best Wishes- Dx
PS Go buy some new expensive clothes...That always breaks a plateau...
Im really glad that article from DX was posted (reposted), it really helped me think of weight loss as going down steps... go down a few.. .then hit a landing... go forward (or back) a few steps, then down again. This has alleviated a lot of stress for me.
I also got some much needed answers to the water weight/exercise thing from this article since I used to take direutics for high blood pressure and was worried that since Ive been off them it would be affecting my plateaus/weight loss especially since I exercise more now post than I did pre RnY. So I did a little test with myself and started drinking water and tea by the litre thinking the extra water would affect it... and all that extra water only made me run to the ladies room faster, didn't really affect the process over time one way or the other.
The mind is the thing that is the hardest part about all of this. Im still finding and recognizing and learning to live with a new center or balance that works for me in terms of my emotions and weight loss or plateaus. I have lots of little talks with myself on the subject!
Another thing that I keep reminding myself, is that its the averages over time that really matter and Ive read it on here so many times that as long as those overall averages are going in the right direction over time, its totally OK for me - but I have to keep reminding myself of that anyway.
All the best to you!
